RMD vs 511?

So I've been thinking that within a few weeks I may need something to get me by til my next ding. I've been looking at the Ratmandu for quite a while but I also think maybe I could use some Res-c in my life. I love the grind on the RMD, and though I've never held one, the blade profile of the 511 looks very Ratmandu-ish. Anyone here have experience with both of them? How similar are they? Handles aside, do you prefer one blade over the other?

I've only owned the Ratmandu and liked it so much i bought an INFI mandu. Haven't tried the 511 but am not a fan of Res C...i know..bring out the pitch forks.

My opinion, I'd go for the Ratmandu

Yep, I'm going to have to get me an infimandu!

Res c is comfy...but the rmd cg is seriously the most comfortable and ergonomic full tang I have ever held..no joke.. for me it's the RMD no question..

If ounces count 511. Otherwise RMD.

Blades are the same. The RMD's choil makes it more useful and versatile.

I have both and like both. I'd probably pick the RMD if I had to have only one, but both are great knives and I'm sure you'd be happy with either.

511 as a smaller res c handle than standart 711 etc, too small for my medium hands

'Mandu for me. I have RMD, SMD, and IMD. And JMD. I've lost count how many. I think I currently stand at 7. It's my drug of choice.

Although, I admit, I e never held a 511.

At first glance, the 511 seems like a slightly higher saber...maybe it is comparitively; but it seems like the grinds are comparable (the RMD blade is taller, but that extra height is on the flats).
As you can see, the RMD handle is longer. I've always felt that the RMD handle is just a little thin. While I don't think the 511 handle is thicker, between the feel of the Res-C and the almost perfect for my hand shape/contour, the 511 wins my vote for comfort. Handle to tip, the blades are nearly the same length...but the choil of the RMD leaves a shorter cutting edge. I can't use that choil-like cut out on the 511 - the shape doesn't work, and the blade digs into my finger. I'm not hung up on choils - they don't make or break a knife, for me; but I know they matter to some people.

Wow! Pretty solid praise for the RMD.

Indeed, and rightly so, but there are other factors. I like the small choil on the 511 and the fact I have more useable cutting edge in its place. The RMD is also 50% heavier than the 511 (291 grams v 188 grams on my comparison).

Thanks for the comparison pics. Like you, I'm not too worried about the choil. My favorite Busse is my SOB and it looks like it has a similar sized choil. Not use able but the blade isn't big enough that it really needs a usable finger choil anyway.

Wow..I've used both on separate occasions.. but never realized how much shorter the 511 handle is! Good point raoh67..its quite a bit smaller, crazy.

That gets me thinkin....how many res c handle sizes are there? .... will the bb13 res c handle be undersized?? Such as the 511/rmd example above^^??

I can't speak to handles on Busse's Basic models; but the 711, 911, Dogfather, 1111, and 1311 have the same handle (or so darned close that they might as well be considered the same).

*Edited to clarify - those handles are the same size as each other, not the same size as the 511.

I vote RMD, one of my favorites in the size range. Not a fan of the square choil.
