Alright, the important stuff. Main Cutting edge design. I like the look and function of the 2014 a little better on this one. It has more of an axe look and a sharpened beard, and I really liked that. The 2015 seems a little smaller and the beard is unsharpened. Probably not a big deal for most, and it isn't a big deal for me, but I just prefer the 2014 a little bit over this one. Both came crazy sharp and are begging to cut something into pieces. The finish and grind lines are a little more pronounced on the 2014 as well. The finish overall on the hawk was a little better in 2014, but I'll do more on that in a bit.
Spike design. There are pros and cons to both here and I like each one a little differently for different reasons. The 2014: I like the stoutness of the design. It is a little shorter and a little fatter in design, and I feel it adds a good amount of strength to the design though it may take away from the penetration capabilities. The 2015: It is definitely a meaner looking spike. It is sharper, it is longer, more slender and will penetrate crazy deep. It will do some serious damage. It is however a lot thinner in design, and I don't know if it could stand up to the same lateral tension that the 2014 could. Pure speculation. I have no data, but just by looking at them, that would be my guess.
Overall finish quality, RMJ definitely did not finish the hawks this year as well as they did in 2014. The flat faces had some pretty good machining marks in them, the cerakote was not as smooth over the surface, they just did not finish them as well, which was slightly disappointing since they were a little more expensive this year. But, overall, not a big deal. The 2015 is still an absolute beast and is finished incredibly well. I was a little disappointed when they said they weren't going to serial number them this year, I was hoping for a matched pair, but again, a very little thing.
These are both outstanding hawks that will take a ton of abuse. The 2014 is a little lighter, a little more portable and I like the head a little better. The 2015 is a little bigger, you'll get a lot more leverage out of it and even though I don't like the head quite as much, I still love it. These are both incredible pieces from RMJ.
