RMJ Tactical - Little bird 2015 (Great Deal!)

i just ordered mine today. i tried 4 times to do it thru the web site but it would not complete the sale. i called them and got it ordered in about 2 minutes. don't give up if you can't get it thru the web site, give them a call. if it is half as nice as my 2014 bird i'll be tickled.

who's gotten their Little Birds so far?? I ordered mine on the 14th, still looks like it hasn't shipped yet. I'm gettin a little antsy for it to get here!

i haven't got mine yet. do you think they have to sell the whole sheet of steel before they cut them out?

Call their shop and check on your order, the woman who works there is awesome and so helpful (sorry I forget your name)

I was in order B and it arrived quickly, maybe a week?

Ill post pics tonight of some good use pics.

I was finally able to get out and really put it to the test.

Chopped through a nice big log of frozen seasoned oak.

This LittleBird is outstanding!!!

No rolls or dings in the edge, still razor sharp after all the chopping / splitting / delimbing / missing

So solid in hand on big swings with and without gloves as a test, the G10 cut they used just works great for traction

This has replaced a few all time favorites for me as my new woods tool.

pics to come......

Thanks MAX, can't wait to see some photos! I have the 2014 Little Bird and it is incredible as well. My feeling is this one is going to be even better. I had thought they were already made, and they made that number and stopped and they were selling them until they were gone. Not sure what takes them so long to get an order out the door when the product is already finished and sitting on a shelf. Guess I'm just being impatient, getting antsy for my Little Bird!

Photobucket is down for maintenance......cant post pics ....ill check it in a bit

Congratulations, I'd barely be sleeping until it arrived. It's a pretty cool design.

Thanks, I'll be sure to get a family photo when it gets here. Hopefully UPS is on its game this week, they aren't known for that however.

Looks like RMJ still has some of these in stock. I find that shocking that they didn't sell out in a day, but they still have them a month later...

Throwing up a few comparison photos, there are some things I like better about the 2015 and some things I don't like as much, and a few that are undecided yet. So, I'll start here:

Sheath quality. The 2015 sheath is far better at fit and quality than the 2014. The 2014 was bulky, it did not retain the hawk overly well and it seemed a little sloppy as far as fit goes. The 2015 is tight, very tight. Very solid retention. Very good finish and it was streamlined significantly. It seems RMJ has really stepped up their sheath game last year, the sheaths on all the new hawks seem simply perfect as far as fit and function go. I liked the different MOC straps provided this year as well. More apt for belt carry, without needing MOLLE gear to carry around your hawk :-P

Size, the 2015 is a far bigger hawk. Didn't measure them, but I'd say at least an extra 2" in the handle. It does definitely seem heavier, but is not as head heavy as the 2014. I don't know which I like better at this point. I like them both differently and like that they have distinctly different qualities, but it is definitely a big difference.

Handle material, the nod goes to the 2014 version for quality and craftsmanship of the material. Micarta was used in 2014 and it felt outstanding and the grip and uniqueness of the look and feel of it was outstanding. I love the look of the micarta handles in 2014. The 2015 handles are G10, they have phenomenal grip, but that is because they are very rough on the flat sides. It feels great in the hand, there is no way this hawk will ever come loose, but if you're doing prolonged work with it, probably a good idea to wear gloves. Again, both are good, I like the 2014 better personally, but I like that they're different as well.

Alright, the important stuff. Main Cutting edge design. I like the look and function of the 2014 a little better on this one. It has more of an axe look and a sharpened beard, and I really liked that. The 2015 seems a little smaller and the beard is unsharpened. Probably not a big deal for most, and it isn't a big deal for me, but I just prefer the 2014 a little bit over this one. Both came crazy sharp and are begging to cut something into pieces. The finish and grind lines are a little more pronounced on the 2014 as well. The finish overall on the hawk was a little better in 2014, but I'll do more on that in a bit.

Spike design. There are pros and cons to both here and I like each one a little differently for different reasons. The 2014: I like the stoutness of the design. It is a little shorter and a little fatter in design, and I feel it adds a good amount of strength to the design though it may take away from the penetration capabilities. The 2015: It is definitely a meaner looking spike. It is sharper, it is longer, more slender and will penetrate crazy deep. It will do some serious damage. It is however a lot thinner in design, and I don't know if it could stand up to the same lateral tension that the 2014 could. Pure speculation. I have no data, but just by looking at them, that would be my guess.

Overall finish quality, RMJ definitely did not finish the hawks this year as well as they did in 2014. The flat faces had some pretty good machining marks in them, the cerakote was not as smooth over the surface, they just did not finish them as well, which was slightly disappointing since they were a little more expensive this year. But, overall, not a big deal. The 2015 is still an absolute beast and is finished incredibly well. I was a little disappointed when they said they weren't going to serial number them this year, I was hoping for a matched pair, but again, a very little thing.

These are both outstanding hawks that will take a ton of abuse. The 2014 is a little lighter, a little more portable and I like the head a little better. The 2015 is a little bigger, you'll get a lot more leverage out of it and even though I don't like the head quite as much, I still love it. These are both incredible pieces from RMJ.

any idea why they just raised the price 25.00? maybe your great review?

Haha, lol. I noticed they did that like two weeks ago. They rose the price on every hawk in the store and now have "free shipping". That seemed a little sketchy to me, but it is what it is. Still great tools

i received my 2015 little bird today. what a value! it compliments my 2014 perfectly. i can't wait to get out and use them. the 2015 is a heck of a value. grab one before they have to be bought on the 'bay. thanks MAX for pushing me:)
