Road Trip

great pic bill!!! those teeth look nasty huh? dale, in all seriousness, a guy was telling me the other day about a back road with ostrich bones on it, and he had one that looked(wierd enough!) like a human leg bone. i will ride by there today and see if i can find them, dont know if u can use them or not, but i will check and get back with u monday. as for cattle bone, i am sure i can probaly find some, but i dont know how weathered they will be. deer bones are commo around here like trees, we are over-run with poachers, so there are plentiful here. i found a huge coyote the other week by the river, if it is done stinking, i will scavenge it for ya too. give me this weekend, and i will see what al i can round up. i may actually have a small deer rack laying around, if i do, u are welcme to it too. i will be at the flea market tomorrow, so if i see any antlers or anything like that, i will trade for them. a few weeks ago a guy had a huge huge set of elk antlers, but he wanted way to much for this plowboy to gettem! but i will start looking today and see what all i can round up.

also, if u have a slaughter house or something like that around, they will usualy give u the horns off the bulls and i am sure they have some hooves. besides rustling u some cattle, i wouldnt know how to get the hooves.

Thanks Kris,
I am just experimenting at this point. There is a slaughter house about 35 miles from where I live, I have thought about going up there & seeing what I can get. I think they slaughter both cattle & hogs. That would be a good start.

For some reason, strange handle material is interesting to me. At the OKCA show I bought some stabilized Sea Cow bone. It is interesting, sort of porous (hence the need to stabilize) and a light orange color. It may have been partly fossilized.

Horn is one of my favorite things to work with. It is for the most part very forgiving and looks great. The down side is that it stinks to high Heavens when you cut or sand it. Often when I am working it, someone will come out into my shop & leave gaging. Which is fine......they leave me alone. :D

Antler is different than horn, more like bone. But, sick puppy that I am, I enjoy working with bone as well. I just wear my respirator.

My dad has a set of elk horns that would probably keep me in elk antler for years to come, but I he wants to sell it. My Grandfather killed it, it is in the Boon & Crockett Club record book, and I guess it is worth a couple grand to collectors. Besides, it would be hard to cut Grandpa's horns!

Thanks again,
Dale

PS- Ostridge sounds interesting. It tastes a lot like beef to me, but don't know what the bones are like. Actually Emu tastes better than Ostridge, IMO. EMU bone might be a thought. Coyote bone.....hum......I think that would have to be scrimshawed with a coyote (of course).
