Roasting the rooster: Les Robertson custom knife entrepreneur

I to have never met Les but have regarded him as "THE GURU" of the knife world. Maybe one day I will be lucky enough to run across him.

I like Les. I don't always agree with him, but he's both a pillar of the custom knife community, and willing to share plenty of good info and analysis. He's been a great help to many, including me.
Well said!! I feel the same way.

Churchill once said, "here is a modest man that has much to be modest about." He was not speaking of Les Robertson. Yes, he can be self-lubricating, but that is only the measure of a man bereft of experience, knowledge, and success in a tough business. Beneath the surface I think is a man aggressively honest and loyal to himself, friends, customers, and the knife community.

I've never seen a thread/post of his that I did not click on because I can always bank on a lucid, spicy, robust opinion. Agreement is not the standard because I can't find 100% agreement with anyone, including my soul mate.

His only foible detected thus far is his devotion to those despicable Chicago Cubs, which deservedly fates him to the hell of Sisyphea's Lift.

For those not well versed in Greek Mythology Sisyphus was the guy whose punishment it was to push a boulder up hill again and again and again and again....well you get the picture:D;)

Sounds like a Cubs fan to me.:D

Les and I have argued quite a bit. I've disagreed with him on many occasion. In fact, He's a pompous #%@ a lot of the times. As much as I'd like to hate Les, I can't. Not that the pretentious prick would care. :D

There are a lot of very good, decent, hardworking people here and in the knife collecting industry that help make it successful and a great hobby for all of us, and Les is definitely one of them.

As other regulars here have already said, "not funny, not deserved".
And I won't be having any of the Kool-Ade.
However Les has certainly contributed a Lot to the custom knife community over a Lot of years.

A roast, in North American English, is an event in which an individual is subject to publicly bearing comedic insults, praise, outlandish true and untrue stories and heartwarming tributes. The implication being that the roastee is able to take the jokes in good faith and not as serious criticism or insult, and therefore show their good nature. It is seen as a great honor to be roasted, as the individual is surrounded by friends, fans, and well-wishers, who can receive some of the same treatment as well during the course of the evening. The party and presentation itself are both referred to as a roast. The host of the event is called the roastmaster. Anyone who is honored in such a way is said to have been "roasted".

severed, thanks for the definition, not that anyone asked.

By the way, this is a custom knife forum.

I've done Business with Les Several Times and Have ALWAYS Come Away Satisfied.Les is Also a Great Go To Guy if You Have a Question that You Can't Get an Answer to,If He Doesn't Know the Answer-He Can Usually Lead You in the Right Direction. There are Quite a Few Knives Out There That He Helped Knifemakers Design Too.His Vanguard Knives Are Pretty Cool Too,I Especially Like The Two Siska Strike Force Models,Not to Mention My Favorite Kit Carson Folder The "SERE".He's Done a Great Deal for the Custom Knife Industry,& The Knife Industry As a Whole IMHO.All in All I Give Les a SOLID Two Thumbs Up!!!

Les Robertson rides into a bar on a great big stallion. He busts open the doors with his entrance.

A drunk at the end of the bar lifts his forehead off the counter and chortles:

"Hey, you! Whush the hell you doing in here wiff that donkey?"

Les retorts: "Listen up you old drunk, this is not a donkey, its a horse."

The drunk responds: "I wuz talkin' to the horse...!"

;)

I'd hoist a drink to Les and allow I have been entertained and educated and provoked by his threads. He's a valuable personality in our field. That's honest. Thanks for the time you spend participating.

Les has passed on a great deal of information that has made my collecting more enjoyable, but he must have incredibly strong neck muscles from carrying around that swelled head of his (hey, this is a roast, right?).

Gentlemen and Lady,

Thank you for your kind comments.

No Kool-Aid drinkers here.

Remember, never do this for Kevin...as this is a custom knife forum...dammit! :D

I've purchased a knife or two from Les - I still have that full-dress Bauchop "Witch" - had a couple of lengthy 'phone conversations, and met him at the Vegas show some years back when I was hanging out with Jeff Harkins, and while I don't always agree with him, I certainly respect the guy. Nothin' wrong with a good earful of well-informed and passionately opinionated discourse/diatribe/discussion - even if it is enthusiastically overstated on occasion. ;)

I remember Les saying "The minute I see a knife, I can tell whether the maker was right or left-handed" and I wouldn't presume to doubt him! Colorful characters make life so much more interesting, and one can always count on Les to make a strong impression.

haha good one Les, perhaps KJ is a bit jaloux.

Not sure wtf jaloux is, but if you mean jealous...no, Kevin is not.

Kevin is a good guy, and I have never seen him jealous.

Les is a good guy too, happy to know them both. It has greatly enriched my life.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

hi Rick,

Actually it is about 5 seconds! :D Thanks!

Hi Severed,

I agree with STeven. Both of us offer insights into custom knives.

Give him another 15-20 years and he will know as much about custom knives as I do...Today! :D

Hi STeven,

Thank you for your "moderation".

haha good one Les, perhaps KJ is a bit jaloux.

However Les has certainly contributed a Lot to the custom knife community over a Lot of years.

Actually severed, I gave Les a very sincere complement. It's no secret that him and I are not exactly pals but that doesn't change the fact that he's always been a champion for custom knives and I respect that.

I assume the word you were looking for was "jealous"? If so, that couldn't be farther from the truth. If this thread were roasting me, I would still be of the opinion (as other regulars have hinted) that this isn't the place for it.

I'm not trying to play forum police here, however I don't care to have my time wasted having to maneuver through threads that are basically infomercials for specific makers and dealers. Example: the never ending Bagwell thread and now roasting. If this is going to be the trend here, why not just make them stickies and allow everyone's favorite maker and dealer to have one?
The CKCA thread that's resurrected every so often could be considered an infomercial as well, however the CKCA serves the interest of the entire custom knife community.
Not trying to make this a big deal, but more stating the point I was trying to make in my original post since Les and severed have found a need to bring it up once again.
