Rockstead knives

I have to admit, when I saw them in person I was very impressed with the demo and blade finishes but I can't wrap my head around why they cost so much. Maybe the cost for the steel and machining of it is very high because the hanldes are just CNC'd aluminum. The blades also look to be CNC'd as well but I can't be sure. There are a couple I woldnt mind owning though. :D

CNC aluminum can't be that expensive. Those knives cost more than my aluminum alloy framed guns, not to mention that Al is more easily machinable and less expensive than something like the titanium they use in framelocks.

I haven't done any testing like this, and frankly, I'm afraid to try it on my knives, but I'd really like to see more vids of various knives tested. I saw one VERY popular and expensive knife tested (YouTube) by cutting thick manila rope and it did NOT hold it's edge like this.

Edge finish, type of rope and edge geometry really matter here as does technique, push cutting vs draw cuts.

Rockstead uses very high polished edges things like that impact on bamboo and push cutting through rope work well... With that type of edge.

Start making draw cuts/slicing through something like manila rope with that same edge and it will get dull very fast and or just wouldn't cut it.

It's all about presentation, while some things might seem impressive they really aren't in reality and not all that hard to reproduce.

Also magazine paper isn't really that hard to cut compared to things like phone book paper.

Presentation for a WOW effect, but those who know better really know it's not impressive.

That said ZDP-189 is a good steel and Rockstead does make good knives.

That's what I was trying to say. The blades must be verrryyyy expensive because I can't see the cost coming from the rest of the knife. The blade finishes look fantastic and some of the designs are nice but I don't think I could ever justify buying one. For the $800+ they start at, I could get a very nice custom.

Sometimes actual cost doesn't really have much to do with final retail/street prices. Same deal with custom knifemakers - some guys can sell a knife with a similar design/materials/fit & finish at completely different price points.

I still think they are impressive knives. I've seen them cut paper with waves in the, it's a sharp edge on there...
