Rockwell Hardness Question

Now you heard :) I wonder how this can be done and why ?

I don’t think it can be done, at least not for any advantage in performance. With the temps and soaks needed, there is no way I can think of to pull this off effectively.
 
Everything I’ve seen so far with torch straightening, it seems to have a very negative effect on the microstructure.
I’ve had similar cracks and negative outcomes trying to leave part of a tang exposed trying to quench something larger than my quench plates.
My point is, having a steel like that with hardened portions that are random sounds unstable.
I know it works with simpler steels, but like Warren, I’ve never heard of differentially hardening a high alloy like that.
