Hi
I recently sourced a benchtop hardness tester in Alberta Canada (not easy). I figured I would post some info to make it easier for anyone else. I looked into alot of ebay ads. Some seem like a good deal but none panned out. The ads from the US wont ship to Canada despite providing a quote for intl shipping. They just cancelled my order a few days after it was placed. There are some from india but they only ship to the nearest seaport. Tha ads are for about 1200 but after talking to them the actual cost is about 2500 plus customs. All local places ranged from 3000 to 10000. Rob from knifemaker.ca recommended kbc tools. That is what i ended up doing. The total cost shipped to Edmonton Alberta was about 1700 Cad. Im pretty sure they also have US stores that would be even cheaper if thats where you live. They guy from kbc sent me a manual via email. It was way better than the included manual and i suggest asking for the quick start quide from them. I would have been screwed without it. The unit came with several tables and test blocks. It measures b and c scale. It required minor calibration as per the guide. If anyone has any questions or needs a copy of the manual let me know. So far it seems accurate and is easy to use.

I'd LOVE to have a copy of the kbc manual since you say it's better than the factory manual. I suspect the unit you got is the HR150A clone? please send to sailingtoo at the gmail acct. Thanks. Ken H>

I included in my post - did you see the "sailingtoo" at gmail? I'm sure you know how to put those together?

I'm not sure if actual full email address can be posted or not on this forum. One problem is with web robots tend to harvest full email addresses to send more spam. Those bots are pretty smart and the way I posted they'll see the "at" as an "@" and put it together and harvest it.

Got your emails. Thanks.

I hunted down around 5 different 150A manuals when I got mine and this one is by far the best. There are different good tidbits in each one that aren't in the others, but this one has full exploded charts that are legible and clear. It's the only way I got mine working!

Where in the states were you looking. I live in Niagara and have a us post office box I'm across the boarder about once per week as part of my Amazon addiction. I wouldn't be apposed to picking one up for someone and shipping it. I get frustrated how much more we have to pay for stuff.

I was looking on ebay. To be honest im not sure what state the tester was in but shipping anywhere in the us is cheap. By the time i added the cost to ship within canada it exceeded the cost of the kbc unit. It also adds time to the overall delivery. Someone in your situation would likely be better served on ebay. I personally couldnt ask someone to incur the hassle of shipping a 200lb rockwell tester for me but that is an extremely generous offer. My experience has been if your in canada and not within driving distance to the states buy from kbc. They treated me well and it arrived in about a week. I ended up picking it up at a warehouse to save some money. Shipping was about 100 dollars. Overall i am happy with the unit but i suspect all the overseas testers are made in the same factory they look very simmilar.

On a side note, I've seen it come up a few times so I thought I'd clearify.

Even though a Rockwell tester uses 150 kilogram force for the C scale, it doesn't use 150 kg (330 lbs) weights to accomplish this.

I believe a lot of the benchtop models weight around 150 lbs, but even the small handheld ones will do C scale 150 kgf weighing less than a kg.

True, but somehow it still manages to be the most awkward PITA to move around! Seems like it weighs 500 pounds when I need to move it.

It's so frustrating what they ding you for brokerage and you have no idea at the time of purchase. I used to cross a lot more when the exchange rate wasn't thirty percent. I'm actually finding ebay starting to get expensive vs amazon. That being said usually the speciality items are cheaper on ebay.

I guess it's a first world problem when I keep forgetting if my purchases were from eBay. CA, ebay.com, amazon.ca or amazon.com. I'll have to check for this rockwell tester. Maybe there's a market to pick one up then sell it in canada.
