Greetings,
Is it acceptable to have a Rockwell indent in the Ricasso area of a finished blade. I like to rockwell test my edge quenched blades, but the indent would be visible as only a small portion of the Ricasso is hard.

Thoughts?

I think the standard practice is to test after clean up grinding from heat treating but before you finish out the knife. So grind off any decarb, test, then finish grind/sand.

It will also be difficult to get a good reading on a beveled piece. The diamond penetrator really needs to press at 90 to the surface to work right, and not worry about harming its point. Maybe you could do it by making the properly beveled adapter for the anvil portion of the tester.

The answer to the question is Yes. Many who test their blades leave the indent on the ricasso.

A secondary issue is that a test on the ricasso of an edge quenched blade may read lower than the edge.

There was a maker a while back who had a stencil made with a circle and the curved word "TESTED". He would etch it around the indent after sanding the ricasso.

Or better yet, etch the hardness number right next to the dot. I've been thinking of giving that a try someday.

Parallel sides ?? What a bunch of wimps ! Try doing the rotating bands on 155MM artillary shells. The bands are near the base of the shell so with one hand you operate the tester while you hold up the front of the shell with the other !!! HAHAHA !
