i'm not exactly sure of the rockwell hardness of annealed d-2, but it's probably around 35-40. it's deceptive becuase of the cobalt, witch is wear resitant. as for rockwell for a cook's knife it depends on the blade size, i'd say 58rc for 6-8" blade, up to 5" keep at 59-60rc.
I just tested a couple of different bars of D-2 in my shop. They both rockwelled at 21 Rc. D-2 does not contain any cobalt, are you thinking of the BDC stuff magnum .44?
Thanks for the annealed D-2 rockwell rc Rob. Not a vital question, but one i've always wondered about. Hard to believe that steel can about triple it's hardness during heat treat!
Thanks guys
can the bdc be used for knives? i'm on a very long search for the best blade steel, for small knives. i'm gonna try some cool stuff called t6, 19% tungsten and lotta cobalt, i think 12%. i know you sell talonite, i might give it a try.
i'm not thinking of bdc, i didn't know exactly what you were refering to, sorry. i seen a chemical break down of d-2, and it was stated to have 1% cobalt. were can i buy bdc, and do you need to harden it?
Rob, this is brian, i sent you the knives. could you email me when you get them. i'm kinda worried, i've never sent my knives to be heat treated before.
thanks
Not to worry brian, the Post Office here only looses about one out of 4 packages of knives folks send for heat treating. ha ha ha Actually all the shipping I have done there was only one small Boo Boo. Ill let you know when they arrive.
PS, Brian I need your e-mail address, I have lost it!
