Rod Grinding Rest

Call me Captain Obvious, but if you made the bottom piece out of angle iron, it would take the flex out of it. :)

I think it's a great idea. Even if you can't hold your blade on it (depending on your blade geometry) you could use it to rest your knuckle on while you pull the blade across the belt. :)

I had thought of a similar rest, but the trouble with the adjustable stop is that most knives taper towards the tip (taper from spine to edge). So while the grind would be set for a perfect position near the ricasso, it would vary depending on the profile of the blade That would make it a little tough to keep the consistent grind line. But, I haven't tried it out, so it may be workable.

Thats not as much trouble as you might think. Having the ability to swing the handle side downward and the tip up as you pull the blade accross the rest, minimizes the effect you are concerned with in your post. I actually used something (a halved section of pipe with screw head "stops", clamped to my Square Wheel's rest) that created an effect like this over twenty years ago and liked what it offered. Now that I am going to start grinding again after nearly a quarter century away from knifemaking, I am building something very much like Padrig's rig for my new KMG. The round rest takes a little getting used to, but it allows you to more quickly manage some fairly creative hollow grinds.

Good info, Techna and everyone else. I'll definitely consider giving this a try once I finally get around to learning how to hollow grind.

Shoots, Pad, it's almost impossible to be original at anything at all any more. I have tutorials on my website that were hard not to write in other people's words because all of these subjects are so well covered. I mean, sometimes I make Loveless types, because I like the darn shape. My post was meant more to really mention Engnath's pages that are still up out there. I never tried this type of blade rest yet but it really looks like a good idea.
