Rolex Sea Dweller

I am not, by no means rich , but I wear a Rolex two-tone thunderbird(turn-o-graph) and love it ! Just love the design !! Gollnick is correct on all counts !Only way to tell a genuine Rolex is opening as I have never seen a fake Rolex movement. The better fakes have all the markings and even have good Swiss ETA movement !! I kn ow there are a lot of anti fakes in this forum but I do wear a fake Rolex chronograph and functions perfect. Anyway, the SD would be agreat watch !! All stainless steel do scratch. If you want a scratchproof get a Rado or others made of ceramic.Must add that the good ones also have sapphire crystal.

Logo laser inscription on crystal has to be a tough one to counterfeit?

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

They only started doing that a few years ago, 2001 I think. If it's an older watch it won't have that unless the crystal was replaced during service.

I just googled it and found many replica sites that claim their watches have laser etched crystals. The fakes get better and better all the time.

I've been thinking about buying a SD for a few years. Sold of my Panerai to buy one and then realized my lifestyle just doesn't warrant a SD.

I just got a Daytona after waiting on a list for 8 years. Haven't worked up to wearing it, yet.

For now I'm sticking with my Seamaster.

STeven,

Dead thread I know.

Would you mind sharing the contact info of your friend who sells Rolex?

I'm giving serious thought to picking up a Rolex Deepsea 116660.

Thanks!

John

Well, might as well throw my $.02 in.
I like the SD, but if you ever wear dress shirts, you'll find that it's a bit thick.
I recently purchased the new Ceramic Submariner no date (ref 114060). It's a great watch, with a killer no tool adjustable clasp.
However, I like my Seiko Shogun better. Granted, it doesn't have a refined movement like the Rolex.
What it does have is a KILLER coating on its Titanium case, bracelet and clasp. There are virtually no scratches on it, whereas my Sub has tons of swirlies and tiny dings all over it. Plus, the light weight makes the watch extremely comfy. I spent about $150 for a Sapphire crystal and nicer hands from Dagaz for it and now it is pretty much the ultimate watch. For a grand investment total of around $1100, it's a killer watch.

Get the Deepsea by all means! I love mine.

Lenny,

Thanks much for the info! Good to know. I appreciate the offer on the Sub but 40 mm is too small for me. The Sub is a great watch though.

CM,

Thanks much for the advice!

You still love your Deepses?

Knowing what you know now-would you buy it again?

Anything you'd do differently?

As you are a Deepsea owner any advice on the purchase and wear of one?

Thanks!

John

Only watch I own. Not interested in any other watches. I'm done :D

CM,

Thanks for the video. Very informative.

I'm getting closer to getting a Deepsea

Thanks again!

John

It's a helluva beater!

CM,

I'm told it's immune to vibration, shock and things like that that would kill another watch.

Have you found that to be true?

I know you don't baby yours and you grind metal (vibration) a lot so your experience is a pretty good test of how it holds up

Thanks!

John

No issues at all, besides running almost 1 second fast per day. I only take it off for EDC pictures.

Actually nowadays, seeing movement is not always going to be a sure thing to spot a fake.
In Sweden, oddly enough, there is a counterfeiter who is making extremely high end fake Rolexes. Fully CNC milled they are copying these things down to the minutest detail, including the movements (with their engravings) in many calibers, the laser etching on the crystal and even have a serial number system. These watches will even accept most, if not all genuine parts. For the price of about $1400. The only way to spot these is to have them authenticated by Rolex itself.

I don't understand why anyone wants watch like that. Just that it says Rolex doesn't make it Rolex. Status thing I guess. It just baffles me.

I have a couple dress model Rolex's and Tudors, and I've owned an Omega or two... But I have to say my favorite and most used watch is my Tag Aqua Racer Chrono... I'm not sure if you've ever had to get a Rolex serviced but it's crazy expensive, so most people I know don't ever even get them wet in the shower.

Yet if my Tag leaked I wouldn't worry about things like replacing the dial and the hands etc. And their customer support is pretty good, as Tag did sell me a dial for my old Pro2000 that did eventually leak, were Rolex would not in a million years.

But the SD is an amazing watch, and if it's calling to you I say go for it!

CM,

Since you bought your SD on the secondary market where would you have it serviced when that time comes? I was talking to an authorized dealer and he said Rolex won't accept watches for service except from an authorized dealer.

There is a Rolex service center a short drive from me and I thought I could just drop off a watch to be serviced b/c it would eliminate the shipping risk but the AD said they would not accept a watch from an individual.

Your thoughts/plan for watch service in the future?

Thanks!

John

There is a Rolex Authorized dealer that has a repair center... Wickersham Jewelers. Backlog is about 2 months.

Qualitytyme is another trusted service provider.
