Looking to get a Rookie or a Para as a good midsize between my Police and Millie's and the small guys like lava. I like the looks of the Rookie but prefer the FFG of the Para. The steel is not as much of a concern I like both VG10 and D2. Anybody have both of these and which do you prefer?

Yikes did not realize how small Rookie was. I thought it was closer to Endura size:(

I've got the Para-military black plain edge in S30V. It's got a full size handle and fits great in my hand, as compared to other slimmer handles. I like the compression lock since it is faster to close the blade, because your index finger is nearer to the lock than the back lock of the Rookie.

But the Para's pocket clip is only for tip-down right-hand carry, which I prefer, while the Rookie is only tip-up right-hand.

ffg=foliage green?

if so, isnt there an fg rookie that was recently released?

my choice would be the para.

Yes, the Rookie is indeed much smaller than some pictures make it seem. It's still an excellent knife, without a doubt. I have one, and it's perfect for slipping into the back pocket to bring out when a larger knife isn't necessarily needed or accepted. It's very slim, very sharp, and very handy. Also has big cutting power in a small package.

Here is a pic of the Rookie and D2 Para Millie side by side so you can see the difference. The Rookie definitely isn't in the same size class, but it's a great knife in it's own class. Just do what I did and get both:D

The Rookie would be my choice in this case. Though the Para is beautifully made, it doesn't quite fit my hand. The choil is too small for my size 15 index finger.

But, if your fingers are normal sized, then the Para is a wonderful knife. I really like the compression lock.

Wow that Rookie is small. Having the Millie and Police have really skewed my perception on knife size I think.

I'd say go with the Para. It's my all-time favorite knife, and it seems the size is more what you're looking for. You won't be disappointed.

I am going to second this.

For me the para and mili carry the same, but the para bunches my fingers up all wrong. The Mili has a perfect grip, so being they carry the same I always carried a Mili. Anyways I sold my paras.

A few weeks ago I took a new Rookie in on a trade, thinking I would trade her out. I am a steel nut so most my EDCs are s30, bg42, zdp, s90. Anyways I also do not dig the short hollow grind on it.....

But I tell you that damn knife is in by pocket all the time now

I reprofiled it, and she will zip through anything I have had to cut. Its thinner than a small Sebbie, so you do not even know its there. And, VG10 steel was a favorite of mine when I first got into the knife hobby. Now I know why, it takes a great buffed edge, and will hold it. I hit my EDCs on a UF benchstone before they go in my pocket anyways.

So Vg-10 will get that razor edge back faster than the "other super steels."

I am thinking about sending her to Tom for a high hollow grind to really push this knife to the next level. And knocking the bump of the handle, it bunches my fingers up when I put all four finger on it. Three finger grip with your pinky hanging off a little is perfect.

Anyways if you have larger knives, I would say try the Rookie. Its a great buming around the house knife, she will clip ITWB undie style and you will never know its there. :D

Para in D2.... Get a low rider for it from STR..
Thats what i had... And now its gone.. Should have kept it..

The Para does seem like it would carry the same as the Millie. Maybe I will get a G-10 Delica it has the FFG and a bit more handle than the rookie with a smidge less blade.

You should reconsider on the para....
And the D2 is some of the best I have used....

Those are very diferent knives. Buy both!

This is always the best advice to these kinds of post.

And for those of you who complain that you can't afford both, stop whining! If it were your cigarettes or drugs we were talking about, you'd find a way to get 'em!

I went totally against my first two and grabbed a green UKPK:) It's made here, FFG, and S30V. I did come into some disposable income though so I may grab the Para too. I wish I could find the green Millie then I could have matching big and lil Millies

You have done well.

Thats a great choice. Very light, perfect ergos, great steel..... lowrider wire clip (perfect for around the house carry)
