I am not sure if this has been done before but I thought I would start a thread on your favorite Root Beer Brands.
Root Beer is the classic flavor of soda pop and predates cola flavored drinks by a decade or two. It has never been dominated by two or three brands like cola or lemon-lime drinks.
My favorites are two of the oldest brands out there, Hires and Dads. Both have been around since before I was born, Hires claims to be the original Root Beer.
The root beers made by the largest soda makers, Barq's, A&W, and Mug all lack something in comparison but there are times when you cannot find anything else. Its like trying to find chips not made by Frito Lay.

Any way, I like a good frosty mug of root beer on occasion, anyone care to join me?

(And whatever happened to Squirt?)

Root Beer is my drink passion. I generally only go for root beers made with cane sugar and will avoid any root beer made with High Fructose Corn Syrup. My favorites are Mason's and Waialua Root Beer. I was fortunate a couple years ago to get a couple bottles of Monterey Bay Root Beer which was/is the very best root beer I have ever had (out of the 50+), but it's near impossible to find a bottle of it nowadays.

I love root beer! The best is at certain brew-pubs that make their own.

Jones was pretty good too, available in bottles and made with real sugar (nor corn syrup).

I can't think of the brand in the little brown bottles...

you are probably thinking of Stewart's, which makes pretty good root beer. Another of my fav's is Virgil's, which you can get in the organic section of giant eagle (for those that have them :D)

Squirt you can still find around here...

Vernors is one drink that isn't found in enough stores

P.S. I like creme soda more lol

Henry Weinhard's and Rat Bastard

Capt'n Eli's and Bulldog are a couple I find tasty, and Trader Joe's Vintage rootbeer I like as well.

I tried Rat Bastard and it was nasty. I bought it because the package cracked me up. However, never again. I am blessed with a soda shop called Rocket Fizz. It is an old school candy and soda shop. I think the first one was Camarillo CA. Next was Ventura, then Simi Valley. I have tried many micro brew root beers there. I am thinking it could be the next Starbucks.

So far, none are better than Sprecher's. It has a magpie akin to Hekyl and Jekyl the cartoon crows on the label with the crow holding a mug. The lettering looks bavarian such as in Octoberfest. It starts and finishes very well. I stopped searching after trying 3 more brands, but went back to Sprechers. Now they make a cherry cola too.

Jones or whatever that other brand they sell at Walgreens with pure cane sugar aren't bad. If you've got a Whole Foods near ya, they sell Dad's rootbeer made with actual sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup. Makes a world of difference.

They also sell Sioux City Sarsaparilla.

We have local brewer called Fitz's which is pretty decent. However, nothing compares to the way the old A & W chain used to serve theirs, in a big frosty mug.

As a kid, I liked IBC because it came in a bottle that looked like a real beer bottle. :p

I like Barq's just because it is the only production root beer I know of that has caffeine.

I like Cap'n Eli's and Maine Root, which also has a totally top notch Ginger Beer and Sarsparilla.

Best Regards,

Oh... Virgils Root Beer is made in Heaven by lovely angels , doing honest work for us to enjoy here on Earth.

It is what I call a sippin' root beer , sip it and let the tastes flow unto your being , you will transfrom into a floaty wisp of joy and harmony.

I love it.
