I've never participated in one, but from what I've read, it's always the same number of cuts for rope cutting, one. It's how many ropes you can cut in one blow. I think six ropes is concidered pretty good. No clue on the 2x4, though I think those are usually timed, so I'm not sure if they even keep track.
we have the times and cuts from the last necka hammerin ..... i think there were 3 people that tied at around 26 or 29 cuts.... a good lesson we learned was a heavier knife was needed for the 2X4s some people went as high as 90+ cuts.... so weight is good. needless to say the light knives still performed awesome on the rope and the water filled can cutting. not sure if this is normal for cutting comps, i'm sure there will be more posts to come.
The cutting competition at the Oregon show included rope slicing compeition. This was the event that really demonstrated edge retentioin. I can't remember how many slices Bill Burke took to win, but they had a scale under the rope, you could only push so much until you were done. This was the most practical test for edge retention to be included in competition I have read about.
