Rosewod clear coat peeling

My Alpha folder has it's rosewood "finish" peeling off, just like the clear coat on a car... here is a photo.. http://s11.photobucket.com/albums/a165/txhawkeye/?action=view&current=Aug2007001edited.jpg

Has any one else had this issue? I posted this problem on the "jerzee devil" forum and "jimmer 5" said he worked for Buck and would ship me new rosewood.. Haven't heard from him since Tuesday 8/14, when i sent him a PM with my shipping instructions. His last post on that forum was 8/16, 2 days after my pm.. .. I know, I know, they wouldn't post it on the internet if it wasn't true..

I really wanted to know how this finishing worked and how it could happen with this type of wood... and how to get the handle replaced or fixed.. The knife is only a few months old..

any thoughts on what I should do?

By the way, apparently there is no way to edit the title of the thread if you make a spelling error in the title of the thread and post it before you catch the error...
...

If the master of the forum reads this, please change "rosewod" to "rosewood" in the title of this thread...

I would send Jimmer another note. He does work for Buck and I'm sure he will come through for you.

FYI I had the same problem on my charcoal birchwood dorado and I can see that the rosewood on my new alpha hunter already has a few chips in it. Apparently the clear coat is not that durable.

...The same thing happened to one of my 277's quite some time ago...I thought I had "dinged" it up or sumthin' and caused the chipping myself...I just removed the scales and sanded the clear off entirely and finished it with some 600 grit...Hand oils have brought back almost all of the sheen of the original appearance and it actually looks better...more natural...without the clear coat...( IMO anyway )...:)

got a pic of it Darryl?

...Lemme see if the kid left her camera here...If she did I'll take a pic...:)

(...She left it here but the battery is deader n' my "way" with the wimmin'......LOL...:o...I'll stick it on the charger and get 'er stoked up again...:))

...Here's those pics I said I'd post...Please forgive the lousy pics...Photography is NOT one of my strong points...LMBO...The top knife is the one I sanded the clear coat off the scales and the lower knife still has the original clear...I prefer the top knife with the clear removed...JMHO...:)

Here's the one with the clear removed.

This one retains the original clear coat.

You are right, I like your sanded version better. Oh, and just a hint, check your camera lens for finger prints/grease. ;)

...You may be right about the "finger prints and grease". The camera has been in the handbag of a 16 year old girl for a couple of weeks now and she stood there watching as I took the pics. I was no sooner done with the last pic than she had it in her hands again and was out the door with her sister...LMAO...Adolescent daughters...Gotta luv 'em...:p:o

Heh...been there, done that, didn't want the 'T' shirt. :D

:D...LMBO...How right you are A.P.F. BTW...I haven't handled those 277's for quite some time...They are a terrific knife ain't they?...:)

Yes sir, those 277's are gorgeous. They make a nice show along with an Alpha Dorado 271. Ah yes, so many Bucks and so few bucks. ;)

Thanks Darryl. I like your hand rubbed finish better that the clear coat also. Nice job.

I have two daughters, 4 and 6, but they still think I'm the coolest thing around. :D Wait til they find out I'm not cool at all :o

You guys try using some Tru-Oil after you smooth the rosewood down with 0000 steel wool. Lightly buff it with the 0000 between a couple of coats. That stuff puts a great finish back on.

I been using to refinish my wood gun stocks for 30 years or more. Tiny bottle of the stuff at Wally in the gun cleaning supplies area. Will last a long time. A little dab will do ya. Fingers clean up with gojo jest fine.

And if you ding it up again, just rub on another coat.

Birchwood Casey product. No,,,I don't own stock...lol

:)...Messy...I'm thinkin' that yer daughters are gonna go through life knowing that their dad is always gonna be the coolest thing around......As they grow up they may not always say it to ya but they will know it and feel it...:)

...Thanks Larry...I'm definitely gonna snatch up some o' that Tru-Oil...Thanks for the tip...

I had exactly the same problem with my Alpha Hunter, only it was like that out of the box! Flaking. Buck took the problem seriously and (eventually, some months, but I do live in the EU) sent me a new set of scales. In the meantime I sanded the old ones down-nice in matte-and revarnished, no problems.
Great lock-up on this knife and hefty too:thumbup:

Still waiting for my Alpha Dorado with Camo scales to be returned though (weak lock there)been waiting since early July and getting a bit concerned about my knife:eek:

LOL... lets hope so... ;)

My finish came off after spilling vinegar on it. AG VANGUARD. I wont go into the whole story .

Aha! My moaning about my Alpha Dorado Camo not coming back from repair has paid dividends:D

Ring ring goes the doorbell just before 8am and the postman hands me a vast box with my small knife in it! Works like a treat now, thank you Buck service staff:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:
