Anyone know if these are available separately or the size? Might try to try making a version of it. Would love to buy one, but out of my budget.

Thanks Count for the link. I've found many belts online, but had no clue what length to buy.

Take into consideration that the wheels are grooved to match those of the belt.

A good reason for the platen to cost what it does. Wonder if it would work ok with regular wheels and a flat belt?

Indeed but USAknifemaker sells grooved idler wheels specifically for rotary platens, for 46$ a piece, the same as a regular idler.

Anybody know if the flanged shaft that attached the unit to the tool arm is custom made? Or is that something I can buy off the shelf?

A rotary platen can be made to fit your needs. Use whatever belt size fits the wheel and the spacing of the roller spacing. It could have only two wheels, and be a firmer slack belt, or three wheels and have three levels of firmness, or four. If I made one from scratch, I would have a long area, medium area, and a short area from three rollers. To be honest, I use the nose as a 2" contact wheel more than anything else.

You will have to use a shouldered roller or a grooved roller to keep the belt on. Grooved is far better. The belts should be available from any industrial supplier is nearly any practical length.
The rollers will need strong shafts and good bearings. Trying to cheap it out may be wasted money. The mount to the tool arm is just a pinch hole and a smooth shaft. You can shoulder it or not. A spacer washer will do the job, too.
