Because they want to. They get bored with the same knife. Also some knives perform better than others in different tasks.

I rotate based on what I'll be doing that day, and the environment i'll be doing it in. Otherwise I might rotate between a few of my favorites, just to keep one from feeling left out... :)

I rotate them sometimes because I get board with the same EDC knife sometimes. My other knives get jealous too...lol. :D:D

I don't like to wear the same color shirt or pants every day. I change them often because I like variety. Same with my knives. Depends on the frame of mind I'm in. I would ride different motorcycles every day if I could afford to. My wife would be extremely peeved if I changed women often, so that's not gonna happen. I guess it boils down to being able to and liking the different variety that's out there... I'd sure save a few dollars if I stayed with one knife like my granddad did. Oh well.

I usually rotate weekly, not daily. The main reason is that I like to carry an other knife or multitool every now and then. Since most knives and multitools can cover most of my daily needs, the only purpose of rotating for me is: fun.

I rotate the knives I carry for many of the same reasons listed such as which tasks lay ahead, as well as weather and what I'm wearing. Some knives carry better in different clothes. I have dress knives, tactical/concealed knives, etc. I rotate handguns for the same reasons. I've come to the conclusion that there is no perfect knife that does absolutely everything, although I keep trying to design and make one.

I think it is fun to get a feel for different knives. Im one of those guys that can eat the same breakfast every day of the week. I like change. I appreciate my blades more when I switch them up once in a while. Its kind of like getting a new knife when you carry a nice knife you havent carried for a while. I don't enjoy safequeens, so rotation is the only way to go for me. If I didnt, id own just one knife and that wouldnt be much fun would it? :)

Well, if you talk to a non "knife nut", I would think the idea of rotating knives is odd. But for people that collect & use knives & are into the various "nuances" of a knife, it makes sense.

I've carried a knife since I was a kid. When I 1st starting getting into knives, I had & carried 1 good knife (An Emerson CQC7 which I still have, but don't carry/use anymore). It seemed odd that I would want to change knives on a daily/weekly or whatever basis.

However, as I got into knives, how else are you going to try out different knives then to rotate them? I can't say I have 1 single favorite knife.

Recently, I went out of town & stayed with a friend that's having some health issues. I was there for about a month. It was tough figuring out what knives to take. I didn't want to bring a bunch with me. I ended up taking only 1 slip-joint & 2 different folders.

Currently, I have a small FB for SD (Along with my CC gun), a folder, & a slip-joint for when I need a knife & am around people that might be bothered by my folder.

It's fun & it does serve a purpose in that it's a way to try out & carry all the different knives one may have.

Now, if you only own 1 or so knives, I can fully understand the idea of rotating seems odd. When I really got into knives, I initially thought I'd never own more 3-4 folders, lol. Now, at any one time, I may have 40 or so & that is small compared to many here on the Forums.

I rarely rotate, I have a few that I carry pretty much every day, same pocket, same position, same torque on the pivots, same edge angle.

Change is good, rotating means a few more touch ups, but more evenly spaced with fewer actual sharpening sessions, it keeps you in touch with a crisp sharp edge feels like so you can better gauge when a touch up is needed.

Some knives I don't EDC, they are purpose driven, I wouldn't mind carrying my hatchet if I needed it every day, I'd probably buy a couple more to rotate.

Having multiples means you can better experiment with what angle you want your edges at as well, get the feel for different steels and blade designs.

I rotate simply because I work in an office setting and my weekly edc needs to be an in-pocket carry that is sheeple friendly.

At nights and weekends I can carry pretty much anything I want within the legal limits.

This alone changes my carry habits from week to week. And let's face it - for those of us who buy 2 or more knives a month it's fun to carry the new toy.

Why I rotate:

  • I EDC a smaller "dressier" knife for more formal occasions like weddings.
  • I carry a larger beefier knife when I will be working in the yard all day or on a home improvement project.
  • I carry ~3" or deeper carrying folders for work.
  • I appreciate the various styles and features between knives.
  • I like the variety.
  • I haven't found the "perfect" EDC knife.
  • I like trying different steels.

Have sold or given away about two dozen knives in the past 2 yrs as that was too many to rotate as EDC's.

I am down to 6 folders and 4 watches and rotate them all. Just got a Strider PT a couple of weeks ago and gave my son the Caly3 that I wasn't using much.

I don't collect or invest in knives and if you have more than one in same size and style you gotta rotate them to enjoy them.

I would like to be able to wait a little while longer in between rotations so I could really get acquanted with the said knife but I just get to dang tired of carrying just one and always go back for a different one. Many times on my days off if I'm just hanging out at home I'll rotate as much as 3 times a day!!

That being said I do see where it can be an advantage in carrying the same knife every day or change every week as it's good to be so used to a knife that it's almost a part of you. Before I became a "knife afi" I carried one knife all day every day and never had a thing to complain about. I carried a CRKT M16 for a couple years daily and then got a Kershaw Scallion that I carried daily for another few years.

This week I'm partaking in a passaround here on BF and have FORCED myself to carry ONLY the knives in the passaround (Spyderco Gayle Bradley and etched Dragonfly). This has been very hard for me but also very enjoyable. I don't usually have to do much honing because I just use a different knife the next day so they never really get too dull. Using just the Gayle Bradley for a week has enabled me to take the knife to the strop and get back into the honing a bit more. I also had a lot of fun playing with the CPM-M4 that this blade sports but I'll do a review for everyone and post it in the review section when my turns up in a couple days.
