rotation

Yes, really its just the 'fun factor.' Rotation lets me actually use all these many knives I have , instead of just letting them sit in the drawer. Not much practical sense, but then, owning more than 3 knives doesn't make much sense either!

It’s quite simple actually.

I rotate my EDC based on clothing, weather, task at hand, pocket space, some knives make me look fat that day so I’ll choose something slimming, clip design clashes with (shoes, shirt, trousers, smoking jacket), orbital alignment of “Io” one of 60+ known moons to Jupiter. I also use an algorithm designed by myself. It requires the daily lotto numbers be plugged in as integers. By the time I wake up the next day my super computer has finished it’s calculations and assigns an EDC from the EDC database.

I buy knives in order to use them, and rotating through my collection depending on what I'm wearing, doing, and feeling like lets me use them all.

I don't rotate, even though I have several EDCs that I like. But my reprofiled AFCK M4 is just so good that I always take it. I enjoy getting to know one EDC really, really well.

I don't rotate per say, but I do change EDC depending upon the pants I'll be wearing. If they have deep pockets I carry a 710. If the pockets aren't so deep, I'll take a Spydie or an Al-Mar. If I need to wear dress pants I'll carry a Moki. If I'm going on a picnic I'll bring an Opinel.

I pretty much only rotate depending on task, daily activity, dress, or work related activity. And most of the time I'll just make one do for all the a fore mentioned scenarios.

I dislike change... can you tell???? :D

The one fast exception being if Salt Water is involved. Then the Spyderco Atlantic Salt gets the nod over anything....

I sleep upstairs. Bathroom is downstairs. I get dressed downstairs. Knives live in a drawer with my socks. Often easier to just fish a fresh knife out of the drawer than to go back upstairs and go through yesterday's pants. When I get around to that, the extra knives and spare sets of keys go into the drawer. Those of you past fifty will appreciate how important getting to the bathroom 30 seconds faster is.

I have them all in a drawer by the bed. I'm too lazy to constantly sharpen, so when my EDC goes dull I just grab another. After there's a few dull ones in the drawer, I'll have a party and sharpen them all.
Right now I'm carying a Schrade Old Timer 1080T(carbon steel).

i never understood why guys rotate their daily carry pieces, i never have. i just dont see the purpose in it. maybee some of you rotaters can shed some light.

Different situations call for different equipment. You can't use the same tool for every job, or so common sense would dictate. An example would be: Do you wear a Gore Tex parka in the middle of summer? Why not?

I rotate because knives vary tremendously in balance, weight, feel, cutting ability, ease of cleaning, and on and on.

The best way to discover the strong (and weak) points of a knife type is to carry it and use it in the myriad of unexpected ways where it will come in handy every day.

How else would I have been able to discover that a folder with one blade like an old-fashioned straight-razor is probably the best style for spreading peanut butter on a bagel?

I just assumed that's what everyone did

I never rotate as such. Every day for almost 10 years I have carried my SAK (Victorinox Cybertool) and Multitool (Leatherman Wave) as these offer many useful tools. I don't actually use these 'every' day - but I would not like to be without them when I need to use them.

But I do use other knives as needed and generally utilise whichever suits the task the best - though I sometimes use a different knife to test it out. Most commonly I'll grab a different knife when I want to slice a tomato so that I can see which knife works the best and also so I can test each knife to see how easily it slices. If I haven't sharpened or bought anything recently I'll just grab my favourite tomato slicing knife (Opinel #8 Stainless).

When I go camping I have some choices for knives to take - so I'll think about what tasks I'll be doing and what knives I'd like to have with me to do them.

I am happy just having the same knives on me every day as well as eating the same breakfast every day - it never bothers me and I don't need variety just for the sake of it. I would like multiple vehicles to give me the most suitable for any given task though (big scooter for city commuting, sports tourer for weekend rides, dual sport for camping, van for carrying gear, 4X4 for offroad, etc).

Do I know you?

Most of my knife rotation work centers around evaluating blade shapes and materials, handle configurations and materials, pocket clips, and lock mechanisms. I am looking for a better "mousetrap" (package). Ergonomics, ease of operation, edge retention, resistance to corrosion, etc. I often modify knives to make them more useful. How else can you form an opinion on friction forging, liquid metal, molded in metal blades, laminated blades, stainless damascus, CPM S125V, differentially hardened blades, beta hardened Titanium blades, and the like?
