Rottweillers and Pitbulls

In my city, there are some residents who keep dogs of these breeds.

These two particular species have a formidable reputation to start with. Some Rottweilers, I learnt, are actually retired guard dogs. Not the most friendly of animals.

Anyway, to make a long story short, in the past 24 months, there have been at least two stories where at least a child and an old lady were bitten quite badly by the dogs. At least one of them died, the old woman.

Now, is it advisable for houseowners to keep dogs of such ferocious nature in a neighbourhood filled with vulnerable people, namely grandmothers and little children.

There are isolated incidents when these dogs leapt over fences and chewed up some unsuspecting people. Quite messy.

Don't people love Daschunds or the old favourite beagle anymore? Mothers tend to find these creatures safer and cuter.

There's an old saying that "there are no bad dogs, only bad owners." While that isn't entirely true, I think the owner plays a large part in the dog's nature. Drug dealers who buy pit-bulls because they look tough, then abuse the animals, give pits a bad name. All the ones I've ever met were extremely friendly, and generally tried to be lap dogs whenever you sat down. For many years, my family had a German Shepherd. Though she looked ferocious (over 100 lbs, with a massive barrel chest), and she was a protective dog, she never bit anyone (or even came close), and I remember my sister sitting astride her and pulling her tongue when they were both about three. Despite this, many people think of shepherds only as "police dogs" or "attack dogs" when they in fact can make wonderful companion or family dogs.

Are some dogs not suited by temperament to be pets? Sure. I've never met an Akita that I'd have around kids. Same with lots of poodles, though. I think the owner's attitude, and the kind of life the dog has led have at least as much to do with how the dog will act. I've only known a few Rottweilers, and they were all good, steady dogs. However, I certainly believe that an animal trained as an attack or guard dog will exhibit characteristics that make it a poor choice for a house-pet for someone who doesn't have the responsibility to deal with it.

The only real purpose they serve in todays modern world is to exhibit the owners stupidity for owning one.

This is a fine example of the sort of ignorant generalization that makes people like Rosie O'Donnell want to ban all guns, and has caused the FAA to ban anything pointy or conceivably sharpenable on flights.

actually smaller breeds of dogs bite more people. I believe the golden retriever bites more people than any other dog. The reason they don't make the news is because the damage isn't quite . I would have to disagree with the poster above that in our times its probably quite violant compared to that of yester years. I would also mention that any dog without the proper handling can be dangerous. Much like a young child without guidance.

Its the training and socialization that count. I was at a parade once. The crowds were thick with little kids on the curb and people on the sidewalk. Several marching bands were to come up the street along with guys firing off the old M-1's with blanks and finally fire trucks with their sirens wailing every 20 seconds or so. Now among this chaos I see this 30ish woman, walking a really nice looking doberman. Little kids grabbed at the thing, petted it as it went past, people bumped into it,,... unfazed. She took her spot at the curb. Bands, gunshots, fire sirens all 15 feet away, it just laid at its mistresses feet. Never was even flustered. I thought man this has to be a highly trained LEO dog and she is a cop. So I go over and talk with her and tell her how amazed I am at her dogs behavior in the face of all these distractions. Turns out she raises and shows the dogs, and just pays a lot of attention to socialization with kids and obedience and takes him almost everywhere. Interesting I thought.

I have 2 Akitas. one is about 2 1/2 the other almost a year. the oldest I rescued and has the fastest tongue in the west. It wants to lick you to death and wants to play all the time with anyone.

the little one also wants to roll around and have a good time with everyone.

it is all in how you raise the dogs and what type of environment you submit them too.

Dude can tell you about the meanest beagle he ever encountered scared the S*&t out of him.

Forget Rottwielers and Pit Bulls,

Everyone knows that a 19 lb Cairn Terrier is the most fearsome beast when it comes to dogs. This one attacked two Rottweilers. He has attacked many hikers and stole their beef jerky. Don't worry, he leaves the granola bars. He's no tree hugger. It's just so terrible. They ought to ban these monsters.

If you see him on the trail, you better knock your buddy down and run!

I owned a Pit before I got My husky and it was a very well mannered dog. I got it when it was a puppy and raised it right and respected there reputation for there agressivness and all was well. The little kids in the neiborhood would play with him a little rough sometimes to the point where most dogs would snap and he just took it or ran off. maybe he was a wuss i don't know, but its my opinion that dogs are like kids its all in how you raise them. If you raise a kid to hate people and be mean the kid will be mean, if you teach your kid to be level headed and calm he/she will grow up to be a mature level headed adult. Same goes for dogs. At the same time dogs like humans have there limit

Has to be one of the dumbest things I've read on these forums. Kind of like bashing someone for driving a car you don't like, and don't know anything about.

My experience with both breeds has been that they are playful, friendly, protective, and loyal.
Besides Rottweilers are purty:p

I think that was just camera flash-though most people are terrified of her (~130-140lbs). Her name's Nikita;) That's my best friend's wife's dog, btw.
His dog is the one that really frightens people, though. He's very protective....
Meet Zeus:)

Now, my 10 week old miniature dachshund, Jessie, would give any of those dogs a run for their money. At 5" high she could hide under the couch and bite their toes as they walked by. Seriously, though, everyone should do some research into dogs before getting one. I picked the dachshund because it is a lap dog that does not fall into those annoying rat-like yip dog traits. It is very proctective and will alert me if their is a problem. And, besides I have the meanest cat in town. A big female maine coon missing 1 claw, named "Kitty Cat". You don't want to know how she lost that claw, trust me.

Due to their reputation for going crazy without warning, I would never own a pit bull even though I think some of them look cool.
But, I did own a Rotweiller and he was the most loving dog and the smartest dog we have ever owned and we have had many breeds.
I am a firm believer that it's not the dog but it's the owner that is responsible for bad behaviour on the dogs part.
Rotweillers are natural protectors of the family and will willingly lie down their life for the family.
Along that same vain, when kids in a neighborhood go by a dog who is fenced in his yard and they poke stickes at the dog and harass the dog while it is in it's own yard and some day the dog winds up biting the kids then I have to say that maybe the kids were more at fault then the dog breed...sometime I even feel like biting the damn kids myself!

Don't blame the Rotweiller breed for bad press...blame the owner for having to show off his macho personality by raising a bad dog.

Alright!! If the smaller dog the longer the life, then my dog will live to be 743. Miniature Dachshunds, AKA.. the furious wiener dog.

Owen,
I have to agree with you. By the way, what kind of dog is that big black one? A bull Mastiff? He is HUGE

Tightwad,
Your remark indeed ranks as one of the dumbest things anyone had ever written on these forums.
