Rouge Warrior Knives

Nancy Marcinko was a friend of mine and as much as I respect her and Dick...

...those products are just cheesy.

Those are by-products of Dicks merchandising machine and while they may bring him a few bucks I doubt he'd leave his Emersons/Striders behind and carry one of those contraptions.

I'm not super familiar with this gentleman (seen his strider collab and saw a video on it).

Care to elaborate? :D
Well his name is Richard (Dick) Marcinko, and he calls himself the Rogue Warrior. I spelled it "Rouge Warrior" (rouge being a color). Just a stupid play on words. I have mad repect for everything Mr. Marcinko has done, I just think he likes to toot his own horn a little too much. Incase you don't feel like googleing he founded Seal Team 6.

*facepalm* Wow I'm slow today.

Regarding these knives, I can't say that I really dig them.

Seem like fairly basic combat/survival knives to me. Nothing really radical or extreme about their designs but I would like to actually handle one.

Seems to be double edged. Article said something about 8A blade steel, probably AUS 8A.

Some one else's google-fu may be better than mine. From what I can find 8A is another name for AUS 8.
Gin-1, ATS-55, 8A, and 440Ccomprise the next group. These steels will usually be stronger than the previous group, and more wear-resistant. Generally speaking, they retain excellent stain resistance properties, though ATS-55 sticks out here as not particularly stain resistant. 8A is also worth a mention, with some vanadium content, it can take an extremely sharp edge very easily, but is also the weakest and least wear-resistant of this group. Ref - Gin-1 vs. ATS-55 vs. AUS-8 vs. 440C Steel Composition Comparison.

For me, price and sheath will be the dealbreakers on this one, apart from performance.

Longtrang, check out Tom Johanning Knives, these are made of A8 steel, I'm definitely no expert but read somewhere that this steel was very close to the legendary INFI. If this is the case these knives may be not as hyped and gung-ho as they first appear. The handles look very Bussessque to me and depending on price might be a good choice. If your suspicions are correct and it's only Aus8 stainless, I agree with you that they're overpriced.

My understanding is that the difference between Aus8 and Aus8A, is that the latter is shipped annealed to the makers. A8 is carbon steel and is usually grouped with A2, O1, but some do abbreviate Aus8 to A8, so it will be necessary to look carefully. I also agree that with proper HT, A8 will give near INFI performance at a much lower price.

ASTM A8

Tool Steel AISI A8

8A

AUS 8

Wonder which steel this thing is made of? Seems like, from what I could find, most versions of A8 are compairable to D2. 8A is another name for AUS 8. While A8 is either refering to ASTM A8 or AISI A8 Tool Steel.
I am no expert so some one set me straight if I am wrong. I also found this-
A8 or AUS 8 Steel

Carbon Chromium Manganese Molybdenum Nickel Silicon Phosphorus Sulfer Vanadium
AUS-8 0.80-0.85% 13.00-14.50% 0.50% 0.10-0.30% 0.49% 0.04% 1.00% 0.03% 0.10-0.26%

The Ingredients

Iron and Carbon
The steel we use for all of our chef knife edges is called AUS-8 or A8. It is similar to 440 A steel. You start out with iron. Add .85 carbon. Remember .5% is already considered high carbon, so that’s a generous amount of carbon. In fact, our A8 8- inch chef knife has a proportion of iron to carbon 70% higher than a comparable Wusthof trident. This means it is a harder chef knife and can take a sharper edge.
