Rough Rider 1160 Peanut Sized "Armor Hide" Lockback Barlow

Great review and pics. Glad youre enjoying the inexpensive knives that the USA company SMKW produces under the RR label.

Basically a copy of this 1160 but with better materials...does that exist? :-)

not that I know of, the lock part. GEC's model #25, 3" WLST's come to mind as "better" materials, that is, not stainless.

But imo, RR makes a cheap gift knife, for non knife nuts that dont appreciate carbon steel's discoloration, and dont know the difference between a toothy edge and a polished one. Im still waiting for RR to come out with some Carbon Steel, but it may not be in their marketing plan.

Here is a thread with lots of pics of GEC 25's http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...st-GEC-25-single-bladed-Little-Jack-yet/page3

and here is an opinion piece about RR http://blindkat.hegewisch.net/RRR/rrr_case-rr.html

Thanks Jon,

I've checked that one out but I havn't been able to warm up to it. The closest I've gotten is receiving a limited edition German Bull Soddie in Red which was probably assembled at GEC. It was very high quality but also sold for $75 due to its limited runs. I gifted it to a BF member who then sent it to a Soddie collector as a gift. So it came full circle and landed in the right hands!

I have looked at the AG Russell version though. When I opened up your GEC thread... all I could think about was that sure is a nice peanut in that photo. Lol.

Anyway here is a photo of the AGR. I have it on my maybe try list if I manage to destroy this little RR. I don't purposefully try to abuse knives but if the opportunity arises I will try to test it. Yesterday I cut up a giant double corrugated cardboard box which held my new patio set that came in the mail with the RR Barlow. It was what I had on me at the time so I said why not. It didnt' do a great job, but that said the blade didn't bend or get wobbly after either! Would love to see a RR in carbon. I googled for it to buy one and didn't see anything I did think they were about to put that steel into their lineup. For now I definitely think I need to pick up a Case peanut just to have. I feel like you need to have a peanut for whatever reason. And I'm going to consider that little AGR. Not sure which order I will pick them up, just enjoying the new single blade pattern for now. When I was using the Colt peanut, the interesting thing that I noted was that I would randomly open a blade and it would be the pen blade so I would just use it. I used the pen blade way more than the main clip on that little peanut. Got by with it mostly just fine.

I can definitely recommend the AGR Barlow. It's one heck of knife. Every aspect of it was designed with a purpose.
Some purists might not like it because it does have some modern elements, but it's a great interpretation of the Barlow pattern.

Oh do you have the AGR? The lanyard hole and choice of steel is a little weird but I find it very appealing!

Here are 3 full sized Barlows in saw cut, gunstock and jigged bone.

Yes , I have one with the ebony Rucarta scales ( it like Micarta).

It's one of those knives that looks much more expensive than it actually cost. The inside is finished just as nice as the outside.

It doesn't use a leaf spring for the lock, it has a small coil spring, inside the frame, right above the lanyard hole that puts tension on the lock. It also has a blade stop built inside the frame too. I had never seen anything like that before , but while looking over a Camillus locking copperhead knife I bought years ago, I just noticed it uses a stop pin too.

If you want to try something different , I can recommend the Barlow, the Gunstock and the AGR Cowboy / Rancher knives.

That's even weirder than originally imagined. Have to get it now, thanks!

great pics, I think RR makes some very attractive handle scales, and their fit and finish is excellent

here is a size comparison between a Charlow and a RR (though neither is lockback, so slightly off topic)

I have read somewhere that the Colt brand has some knives available in carbon steel, it is not 1095, but I think I saw that it was something like 1075. I think the Colt brand is made at the same plant that produces the Rough Rider knives, since the same person owns both brands.

About a year ago RR announced through their facebook page that they were working on a new carbon steel line. I gave lots of input as did others, then they went silent.

I put in my 2 cents on their FB page as well. Some of the titanium Colts are listed as carbon steel, and a company by the name of Cattleman's produces a line of carbon knives in China, but they're 1065, which would be too soft for my taste, I'd assume have decent 440A. Still if they could get 1095, or SK-5 (maybe it'd be easier to get in Asia), I'd say they'd have a real game changer.

Here the one I picked up.

Same one! Outside of having to tap in the pins with a punch its been my daily carry. Makes for an awesome light utility edc. I especially like the armor hide vs regular jigging. Can anyone tell me if the scale material is molded delrin or plastic even?
