Rough Rider & Related Slipjoints

i just received this colt utlity/scout knife in the mail. I don't have the energy for a review right now but to say that i'm impressed is an understatement.

I usually keep my rough rider, colt, and other inexpensive knives in a cigar box separate from the rest of my collection but this one is going in with the "good knives".

I'll let the photos do the talking but i do want to mention that i really like the fact that it does not have a bail.

nice very nice colt.

Nice Colt. It looks to be indentical to the Marble's Workman except that has black or red micarta scales. IMHO, probably from the same factory.

Has anyone handled both a colt and a rough rider peanut? I'm in the market for either one of them. The colt is marginally more $$. I'm looking at the black stag (colt) and smooth bone (rr) specifically.

I have 4 or 5 Rough Rider folders (SMKW calls it their "house brand") and have found them to be on par with the modern traditional Buck's made in China and they come nice and shady out of the box. I do feel their better quality than what Old Timer and Shrade Imperial are currently putting out.

I do have a bunch of both. The quality is often difficult to tell the difference, coming out of the same shop. But I'd guess that the Colt line is considered their premium line, mostly because of the packaging. I think almost all of my Colts have come in something like the box below. But only a few of the RR's have. Not that it makes any difference in the knife, but it's sometimes hard to store the boxes away. [emoji41]. But the actual cost difference may be all packaging.

I agree the packaging adds to the cost (and does take space to store), but the Colt knives I have seen have had more details, and seemed just a bit more well finished, than the RRs.

Someone posted a photo of one of these a few pages back and it inspired me to get one for myself while they are still available. As mentioned in that post this comes without a bail, which was one of the things that attracted me to it. As it seems to be for most Colt branded knives, this is a well made knife in all respects, and I especially like the shape and hollow grind of the master blade. This one will be added to my EDC rotation, and at nary a Jackson in price it would be no great loss if it were damaged in use. That being said, it seems to be a very sturdy tool that should hold up well and look good in the process.

Here are some pics of Rough Riders that arrived this week.

In a previous post, I displayed some of the Rough Riders that were part of my June spending frenzy. Here are some other RRs and related slip joints included in that order.
1) A RR Christmas canoe with some fancy (but kind of freaky) filework.

2) A red jigged bone RR camper/scout to replace an amber jigged bone version that I gifted to someone.

I also have a Buck 389, and I like it. Decent fit and finish, blades razor sharp, and a nice pocket friendly size.

Completely agree. The 389 is one of my EDC Trios. Altho this week it has been given a rest, so I could try out the Rough Rider 1287 Half Hawk I got. (Yeah ... I know ... the sheepsfoot is redundant when paired with a stockman ...)

I bought two Sowbellies last week a RR and a Marbles. The Marbles cost about $5 more but came with a little pouch. Here's the thing the nail nicks and the shields are identical except of course the brand name. This leads me to believe they are made in the same factory. IMO the Marble looks much better but do some of you more knowledgeable folks know if they are in fact produced in the same factory.

Both brands, (as well as Colt), are owned by the same Tennessee-based company and are indeed made at the same factory, (I asked that very question while at their store when I was in TN recently and they confirmed it). I have a Frost Sowbelly that looks more or less identical, other than shield/stamp, so we can assume that Frost too uses that same manufacturer, (among many others I'm sure). I like how a Sowbelly feels in the hand, good "user" knife for pocket carry. Nice knives, thanks for sharing.
