Nice RR collection. I'm a barlow freak myself. You need to add a Colt black bone stag barlow to the collection. Made by the same folks (and same quality) as RR. Don't know if they still make it, but at one time RR made a really neat lockback cannittler (whittler in a cancoe frame. Keep on collecting.

Wow, that is a stunning physician's knife, Wesmanthetiger! Thanks for posting it. That abalone is quite nice.

I'm glad you like it Alex. The penny is from an old tradition a lot of us here on the porch still practice. It says if you give or receive a penny with a gifted knife it will never sever your friendship.

Also please enter my Give Away http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1411735-Opinel-Collection-GAW I know I put a posting condition in the rules but you have jumped right in here with us and It's my GAW so I can change the rules if I want to. :D

Thanks, Randy! I saw your GAW yesterday and wanted to enter. Thank you for allowing me to enter! I will! Thanks for informing me about the penny. I was wondering about what it meant! I like that tradition and sentiment a lot and will continue it when I gift a knife to someone.

Thanks, Rich! I've only been collecting Rough Riders since last fall. I have two more on the way, too. A white smooth bone canoe and a yellow barlow. :D I just checked out that Colt bone stag barlow on that auction site. Very nice! I might have to add it to my list.

You can get the Colt barlow from that big store in the Smokey Mts. I think (?) they own and contract both RR and Colt and Marbles.
They recently started with a brand called "Old Forge". I bought two Old Forge knives and IMHO they belong in the litter box with the other material that gets deposited there. The RR, Colt and Marbles are all fine knives, but I'd stay away from Old Forge.

I thought I would post a pic of my growing Rough Rider collection. For the most part, they are well made knives and worth every penny. The only exception is the teeny, tiny purple barlow. It's darn well useless because it's so small. More and more, I'm discovering that my favorite pattern is the canoe. They just feel so good in my hand. It seems like I prefer a spear point blade, which is probably why I love SAKs and also my Kabar Dozier. I think I'm going to save up for a Case Canoe in cv. I would say that my second favorite pattern is the barlow. Love me some canoes and barlows!

I would recommend the sowbelly stockman. it's one of my favorite RRiders.

Rich, thanks for the tip about the Old Forge knives! I have yet to check out any Marbles knives...not yet. :)

I did recently pick up these two knives. A Steel Warrior Peanut and an Imperial tiny trapper with imitation abalone. They're both decent, but I especially like the Steel Warrior.

I have a couple of Steel Warriors too and like them a lot, they are sold at the local hardware store here so the ones I have came from there. One of their selling points is the fact that each knife's 440 SS blade has been Rockwell tested, (one of the few brands using 440), and they come with a yellow arrow to indicate where the test was done. Though the brand is owned by a different company, the knives supposedly are made in the same factory as RR. How well the knives are made is basically up to the brand owner, the factory(s) are capable of very high quality, they just produce them according to the brand owner's parameters. RR, Colt & SW seem to be consistently well made, which is a testament to the respective brand owner's insistence on a certain degree of quality. In my experience RR, SW & Colt are usually of superior fit & finish, and they seem to have good quality control standards.

Schrade and Imperial brands (as well as Smith and Wesson) are Taylor brands. Both of fine, but I like the quality of RR,Colt and Marbles better. Just MHO.

I'm also a SAK guy. Always have my SAK Tinker on a lanyard attached to my Fenix E05 flashlight.

I forgot, I do have a Schrade Old Timer barlow and a saw cut bone stockman - very nice. Also several non-traditional Schrade linerlocks and A/Os that I like.

How do you like it? I have one just like it. I like it a lot!
I have a few RR slip joints so I rotate out frequently, but when I need something light this is my go to. I live in Florida so summer dress code is shorts so no heavy knives. As far as specifics, I do wish the imitation abalone was a little more random. There's a definite pattern that doesn't help it look real, though I did pay $12 so I'll "deal". Because the main blade is long and narrow the spring isn't too stiff like some of my other RR knives, so it's really easy to open without being too loose. One other thing, I've never had the Physician's style knife before so I don't know if this is normal, but when the blades are open they are slightly angled like 5° off from the handle. I expected it to be like a Melon Tester that opens straight in line with the handle. Again not a big deal but I wonder if that's normal for this knife type or just a QC issue. Either way I still use it and like it. ;)

Yes, sorry; you are correct; Steel Warrior is Frost. My ancient brain had a senior moment :-)

Don't feel too bad, Rich, at least the brain is working enough to have senior moments rather than senior months or years.

That's true.

My main problem with modern traditionals (is that an oxymoron?) is that some "makers/trade mark owners" are using several different names for their lines. Don't understand why all knives made/contracted by a company aren't just marked with that company name. It also bugs me that some have bought (?) rights to use some of the famous vintage manufacturers trademarks. Yes, I know that's been going on for hundreds of years; various old companies contracting others to make their brands. Hopefully that doesn't confuse newbie collectors to think they have a 50-70 y.o. knife which is only a few months old. I guess they will/better learn very quickly. Oh well, you live and learn or you don't live long ;-)

Hate to tell you, but of course they hope to attract newbies by using a famous old name on their newly minted imported products, in this modern world it's just good business. Caveat emptor.

Sonny 14SW , like the White Tail brand is a Frost brand, some are made in China, others in Pakistan (with German stainless). Those made in Pakistan are not the same level of quality (though not bad) as the Chinese made.
