Rough Rider & Related Slipjoints

Thank you for the picture.. is that stainless for the case? Anyone know how the stainless from RR compares with Case's?

Here's a picture of one next to a Case peanut. (it came in white bone- skrimshaw is mine) It's OK, but I would say the f & f is a bit rougher. It has a less elegant look to it to me, but that is a matter of personal esthetics. I can't say too much about how it holds up, as I haven't really used it for much more than opening mail. I'd say try one. At under $10, what have you got to lose? Well, $10, I suppose :)

The case is stainless, although it seems to have a bit of patina. I got it used, so I don't know what the deal is with that. :)
I don't feel there's much difference between RR's and Case's stainless. They edges will roll, but are easy enough to sharpen, although it can be a little tricky to remove the burr.

My post 1537 shows the Jumbo Trapper but I'm not sure they still make it. The should, it's a great knife.

Robin

I have been on the lookout for a Bulldog Thor or Viking whittler. I lost the bid on one last week that went for $86 and change shipped, I bid $82 ish. I have been wanting to try a Rough Rider or similar knife and I found a 3 7/8" Steel Warrior in a similar pattern to the Viking. While it's not as nice of course, I think It is going to be a good compromise considering I saved $60 ;) Oh and I am still checking out the suggestions that have been made for a RR.

I wanted this:

I got this:

I should mention that I thought I had this all wrapped up when I won this Bulldog but I misread the description and even though I got a decent buy on it, it's a monster at almost 10" with the main blade open and far too big for what I need. Thus my search into the Rough Rider territory.

If you search for Rough Rider Fat BoyTrapper, you get this:

It's 4 1/8", about a 7 pull on both blades, snappy half stops, blades centered, flush backsprings when open and closed, and no wobble. I'm warming up to the reddish-orange tinted Fat Boy

You know, that is a pretty doggone spiffy looking knife right there. I love the shaded bone and the acorn. Nice stuff.

Was browsing ebay yesterday and I came across this knife [a Colt Cub/Pony lockback]. Now, obviously Colt knives are of dubious quality, but I like the pattern. Does anyone else make a similar knife? I've searched knifecenter, but have yet to find anything like it.

Welcome to Bladeforums! You will need to remove that link because it is against the rules. Just trying to keep you out of trouble.

One question, does the knife in question half to be a lockback? I have not seen anything else like that in a lockback but a sunfish or elephant's toe might work. I don't know if you can find those patterns around 2.5" closed though. That is a really small knife you have there.

Thanks for the tip, didn't know it was against the rules. :foot:

It doesn't have to be a lockback. The sunfish and elephant's toe are definitely in the vain of what I'm looking for, but I'd prefer not to go over 3.5 closed; I'm in MA, which isn't exactly the most knife-liberal area. :thumbdn: Does anyone reputable make a small sunfish? the only one I could find is by Rough Rider.

New question: How bad is the quality of Rough Rider/Colt lockback knives, exactly? All of the traditional style knives I own are by Case, so I have no idea what to expect. [I understand the blade steel is low-grade, my question mostly concerns the likelihood that the lock will fail under light-medium use.]

I have nothing bad to say about rough riders or colts. They are 440 series stainless so not terrible, fairly good build quality in all the examples I have owned (little bit of grit on opening but easily fixed with wd40).

I wouldn't think twice about purchasing a rough rider especially to try a pattern out.

Going to merge this with the Rough Rider thread. All sorts of positive posts about the quality vs. price point. (Colt knives are considered to be a notch better than Rough Rider.)

I got this rough rider to see how I like gunstock patterns, thinking of getting a queen yellow gunstock.

First off, for like $8 shipped, this is a super well made knife. Centered blades, even springs, good action, even grinds and edges. But it needed something:

So less than ten minutes later and I have a clip main and sheepfoot secondary. Pretty happy with it.

I've got the RR Sunfish in Amber Bone and it's a great knife and a real cutter. Several guys over on another forum I've on have picked them up and they've been quite happy with them. I sent an extra to a fellow who deals in knives and does high end polishing up in Wisconsin. It's become a big favorite of his. Of course he had to go put a high level polished edge on it.

Thing is he became so enamoured with the ET that he went and bought several of the GEC Whalers and now carries one as well as having sold several to his clients.

The ET/Sunfish pattern is actually a pretty handy pattern. It fills the hand, but isn't too beastly. The flatness means it can be pocketed nicely. The tall blade has a little weight that really seems to help with cutting. In doing some searches a few guys in England seem to really like them because it gives you a bit of knife and is still legal both in size and not being a lock blade.

I don't know about the Colt tactical and locking stuff, but I do have two of the Black Stag Bone scaled traditional knives. One is the 175th Anniversary edition Barlow and it seems to be well made and finished with a good factory bevel on the edges. I've only done some test cutting, but it cut some paracord and leather well. The other is a Congress and seems just an nicely done.

Sad fact is that both the RR Elephant Toenail and the two Colts in Black Stag had better fit and finish and edges than did the 2013 Case Canoe in Smooth Chestnut Bone I got about the same time as the Colt Barlow. That was really a let down as I'd gotten the Case Canoe to go along with the 2006 made Case Mini-Trapper in the same scales that I love and that has spent long stretches as my everyday, as in always, everyday, not rotated, carry.

I also recently picked up a Colt CT608 Trapper with carbon steel blades (titanium coated) and black G10 scales. I have a thread on it with a pic or two and some cutting done with it. I have to admit I am really liking it right now and I paid a whopping $14 for it on the bay.

Oh, and here is my RR ET along with the above mentioned and well loved Case Mini-Trapper for reference.
