Rough Rider steel???

Pretty much all of the steels in this low to mid-priced category are so similar in use as to be the same. Unless you get down to 420J2 at the low end, or 440C and equivalents at the upper end, they're all easily sharpened and hold an edge for a useful amount of time. When you start getting into the ATS-34, 154Cm, D2 and the powder steels like S30V, then performance goes up a notch.

You know what, they are like ten bucks. Anyone curious should just buy one. Try out the steel for yourself. I have two. They are good little knives.

I don't know ... if the offshore Bucks like the 371 Stockman and 389 Canoe use the 420J steel, they must have a better heat treat than the others that use the same steel. Like their 420HC blades used on the US made knives do.
My 371 and 389 hold an edge just as well as my 301 does, doing the same tasks, and is just as easy to strop sharp.

Buck 420j takes razor edge easily, when you regrind it,as grinds on mine were bad from factory and extremely thick. This steel doesnt keep edge for long time, its nowhere near 420hc.I had to sharpen it every day when edc stockman and solo.
