Rough Rider trapper giveaway GAW ||winners chosen|| post 25

Ok, ok... the suspense is killing me. Put me down for the mystery knife!

OK! Then that means I get to give that trapper a whirl.
Please update us on whatever you get, and I'll do an update on how that trapper works out for me.
At the very least I'll have an idea of weather or not a standard trapper is for me.

I apologize for not sending them out yet. I was able to get a table at the local farmers market to sell my sketchbooks and journals and have been busy getting ready all this week.

I have them mostly packed and should be able to get them out next week.
Thanks again for your patience.

No problem man 👍 your giving them away and shaping out of pocket, so send 'em out whenever you feel like it.

No sweat, Neko2! As Hickory said, whenever you're ready is good enough for me. Thanks for the update!

Just a quick update that I mailed out the knives last night.

Keep your eyes peeled.

Well my first impressions are that it's a large pocketknife😱😱
I've never had a full sized trapper before, and kinda expected them to be about the size of a sodbuster Jr. The walk and talk of the blades is great , and while the clip blade could use a touch up the spay blade is very sharp. There was also a special surprise of a memo book and sketch pencil ( I had a set of these US general pencils when I took graphic design in high school )
For me it's a little large to just drop in a pocket, so I'll need to make a sheath for it first before I carry it. That clip blade just looks like it wants to cut my dinner, so I think that what I'll use it for for now.

It turns out that the clip blade was bent, so I quickly straightened it with 3 little blocks of wood, some thin leather and my vise.
Now it pretty good.
All in all I can't complain as it was free, and it's still a decent user.

Glad that it arrived safely and that you liked the pencil and memo book. I make the books and was getting ready for a show and it seemed a worry cause to send a couple out.
I didn't notice the blade bend but I'm glad you got it sorted out :)

I hope you have fun with it and use the heck out of it.

Congrats on the trapper, Hickory... looks great! Now I'm starting to second-guess myself on opting for the "mystery knife." (not really!)

My prize hadn't arrived as of Saturday's mail. I'm now at work and I expect to find it waiting for me when I get home. So pictures, impressions, etc. tomorrow.

Neko2, I'm a pencil/pen/paper nut as well, so if I'm lucky enough to find a bonus pencil and notebook, I'll be an even happier camper!

I'm sure it'll get used, but for now I'll just use it to cut my dinner.

So the package from Neko2 was indeed waiting for me yesterday evening. It was time to finally reveal the "mystery knife!"

Drumroll please.....

It's a half hawk (RR1287)! Cool! A pattern I do not have, and per the point of the GAW, my first Rough Rider!

It is a large knife, by far the heaviest and (I think) largest traditional I have. It's really stout, with a very crisp half stop and great snap on opening and closing. Pretty much everyone seems to say this about their first RR knife: The build quality is amazing for a knife that costs $6 and change new at the brand owner's website. There are no gaps between liners and backspring whatsoever. Neither is there any blade wobble or slop. The knife is reasonably sharp as well. If I had to pick a nit, it's that the edges of the yella covers are cut so sharp. I suppose I could sand the edges a little to round them off if I chose to.

It should be a very competent work knife for the yard, etc. It looks as if it can take some punishment. Did I mention that it's large? And beefy?

As with my co-winner Hickory n Steel, Neko2 was kind enough to enclose the bonus notebook and pencil. Much appreciated! They will see use as well.

So thanks again, Neko2, for pulling my name from the hat and making the "mystery knife" so interesting and utilitarian!

Excellent stuff, major_works and Neko2.

major, the bone half-hawks seem to have quite exaggerated corners as well. I believe that trait is uniform across all the finishes. I wonder how sanding down that RR yeller will impact that inbuild color variance most of them display. Yours looks pretty consistent but sometimes a photo can lie as we all know.

Congratulations to you and Hickory n steel!

That's a pretty cool one, I'm glad it wasn't green 😁 ( I don't mind yellow, but was banking for the mystery knife on the chance that it would be green )
I'm sure that you'll get some real use out of that knife.

Judging by my experience with this trapper, I'd not hesitate to buy a rough rider knife.

I'm glad that everyone got their knives and so far look to be enjoying them.
I've been pretty impressed for the price and im happy to be able to share that experience.

Thanks again everybody.

I used it in the kitchen tonight to cut up some pork and it worked very well.
It didn't take long at all for me to give it a touch-up before use, and get it to a real good edge.

In my experience they take a pretty nice edge. I use a colt and a rough rider as my whittling knives.
They seem to hold an edge longer than my SAKS on the same tasks.
