Pretty new knife maker and currently doing it all by hand.
I have seen scale / handles that are rough lectures, especially on the cleaver and tactical type designs, are those made sanded like that or do you buy the scales in that pattern?
I think this is it on Jason Knight's Jurassic Bird & Trout.
And I think flint knapped is what it's called, although I have a friend on the forum who calls it the "Bizzaro Superman" look.
I have one but this is either Joe or Jason's image and I quite like the look but understand some folks don't.
I'm having a Bowie/Fighter built now and was gonna' use this style handle w/a little more flare at the butt but decided on a nice wood, sculpted instead.
Scalloped. Done right it is quite comfortable and adds a lot grip.
And that Knight is a nice example. Burt foster does a really nice scallop texture on his tacticals.
With a small contact wheel on a grinder, or even a sanding drum on a dremel or drill press, after the handle has been normally shaped, just take small "bites" away from the material until you get the desired look. One way would be to go around the perimeter (outside) of the scales first then go along the top of them last. After then, very lighty sand over the edges of the texture so they aren't "sharp" and don't produce hot spots when using the knife. There are probably some tutorials on doing specific patterns.
