Roughing It: FOR REAL

PM me if you get lonely and I'll bring you the latest W&SS gossip.

Overland Park KS! :) Hey I used to live in Overland Park at 103rd & Mastin area :) Hell I'm only about a 30 minute drive from there now.

OH I won't be too long without a way to get on the internet. The Cell Phone coverage at the cabin is excellent for some strange reason. So I'm sure I'll get something going before too long.

I am glad that this cabin is in the Missouri Ozarks because there are so many deer down there that you would think farmers must be raising the darn things :D. The fishing is great at Lake STockton and Caplinger Mills so I know I'll have plenty of fish to eat.

The place is great for mushroom hunting in the spring. But there are a few snakes down there

I like the way you are dealing with this change in your life, you will get something unique from this for sure, just remember this when things will be difficult (cause things will be difficult at times, you already know). Hats off to an open minded approach to life. If I were you, I would take advantage of the particular situation -and possibly more spare time- to take a journal of your experiences and thoughts. Then, if you wish to share some of this by posting I would be delighted to read it without a doubt. Good luck, be safe and trust the good things will come someday. :)

Ciao!

That's a GREAT attitude to have going into this

Please keep a posted and KEEP A JOURNAL as well.

Starting from day one(or before you even get there)

I second this! I would look forward to reading this after you get back on your feet. Sorry to hear about your situation but maybe you could publish your journal and make a few bucks from a bad situation?
I'm sure there are plenty of folks that can relate and would enjoy the read.

I'm sorry to hear about the situation and job.

Glad to see you are in good spirits over the upcoming change. I suggest you get together a good first aid kit to bring along as well. Stay safe and make the best out of everything. Sounds like you know what your getting into and are in the right mindset so I'm sure you'll do just fine.

It is not that tough, I was 15 before we got electricity and indoor plumbing. Those out houses are not fun when it is thirty below zero though.

Get you a large metal bucket and one of those solar shower bags,or at the very least the nozzle end that fits the same size water bag.Heat water on the wood stove fill the solar shower add cold to keep the water temparature right hang it outside somewhere private and have a hot shower.Works very well out there.Or find the nearest community centre with swimming pool and shower there if one is near.

Is there anything we can do? Supplies? Equipment? I'll be glad to help you out in any way I can. Just shoot me an email or pm if you want. Good luck!

In a way I kind of view this as a "head start" in many ways. Because I have no doubt what so ever that this country ( the USA) is truly heading full steam towards a major political and economic trainwreck. There is no way that I can see to avoid it. I just got news 15 minutes ago that my next door neighbor who was a sound engineer at a huge gambling casino here in Kansas City, Missouri just got laid off indefinitely :(. And just 2 months ago he was bragging that he had one of the most secure jobs in the entire Kansas City area.

With the abysmal traitors that are running this government/country and giving huge incentives and tax breaks to big corporations to take high paying jobs overseas I only see the situation getting exponentially worse :(

When these gambling casinos are hurting you know that there is something seriously wrong. Because the last businesses to take it on the chin are the bars and casinos. Hell is heading our way folks. I wish to GOD I was wrong about that. :(

I'd try to get food stamps and if you can get unemployment and stay there as long as possible:thumbup:

live off the government and be a drain on society, good idea.

i come here to learn so i dont really post but this had me. disgusting

Best of luck to you in your situation. Great positive attitude

I was in the exact same situation 19 years ago , and had to live in a cabin also. Problem was , I had to drive 3500 Kms. to get there !! Everything worked out in the end , but losing my job then was a real shock , and within 2 months lost my first apt. and most of my stuff ( except tools and camping gear.)

Keep plugging away and stay positive. Something good will eventually come up work-wise.

I 3rd this idea.

And, I agree with rwiggins. Anything I can help with I will, pm or email.

I do have to admit, crappy circumstance, but the idea of being out there like that, that'd be nice.

All of the public libraries around here have internet that is free. Most have a cybernanny program that won't let me connect to Blade Forums though, but they did let me keep up with friends when I was offline.

Good luck!

I'll second the advice about the internet use at public libraries. Most have some access.

I encourage you to keep a detailed journal. You will have a unique story to tell when this chapter of life has been completed.

I've been through tough times before and I came out a better man in the end.

All I can give you is some advise I have taken myself.

All those things you put off doing because of job, money or whatever got it in the way...

Do 'em.

Take the risk, read, practice your skills ( woods/survival and others) and you will fail at stuff as well as succeed. Bring a Harmonica, guitar or a musical instrument you have always meant to learn. Listen to the suggestions posted here there are a lot of good ones.

You WILL find out what matters to you.

Electricity isn't that big a deal to do without...I've done that a few different times by choice...but what are your plans for water, both collection and storage? Does the cabin have gutters? A couple of large garbage cans from a dollar store can be used for improvised cisterns. I used to have the rain water from my roof routed to a barrel that was under my porch and I would fill up all my jugs from my cistern as it was raining and then I'd have forty-eight gallon jugs stacked up in milk crates, and then another thirty-five gallons in the can.

Living life in the way your headed makes getting back on a "normal" schedule easy...asleep shortly after dark and awake at day light.

Having an actual roof over your head and a place you can can more or less call "home" is a pretty nice thing. During the recession of the early eighties I wound up living in my truck for several months, the novelty wore off real fast. You seem to have a very positive attitude, as such I'm sure
the opportunity you've been presented with will strengthen you. My advice: truck stops often have pay showers, a good opportunity to get feeling civilized again.

Hey Buddy! Hey thanks a Billion for that offer and that goes to ZENFUL1 too :) I really appreciate the great, generous offer. But I've pretty much got about everything I'm going to need to get the show on the road so to speak. Right now all I really need is just at least an average paying job.

That's one of the reasons I opted to move into that cabin. I've been studying survival techniques for quite some time and I guess maybe it's time to just see what I'm really made of. And if I'm right about an economic trainwreck being on the horizon I truly do feel like this will be a head start of sorts.

Just 2 years ago I was turning down a lot of work. Now it's tough just finding odd jobs and part time work. We just don't know what kind of changes life is going to put in front of us. But I'm telling all you guys/gals I'm really humbled by all the kind words of encouragement and offers of help. This forum and the Spyderco.com forums both have some of the best people I've ever known. Thanks a million guys :)

The 2 biggest problems I see with surviving is obtaining safe drinking water. I've got that base covered with a really nice Aquarain gravity/ceramic charcoal water filter/purifier. Also knowing how to make fire without the use of matches or cigarette lighters. I've got that base covered too.

I'll consider keeping journal. Maybe that would be a good idea. I sure have a feeling that this isn't going to be an episode of Man Vs Wild though :D

This sounds a tad holier than thou to me. Besides which, I expect that JD Spydo has probably paid into the system for years - so he certainly has the right to make use of services like EI / UI if he wants / needs to. That's the point, after all.

Anyway, JD, I hope that things work out for you.

All the best,

- Mike

I remember the early 80s brother :( and believe or not this is the first time I've been unemployed or under-employed since that time period. Yeah I hope to get a job in one of the truckstops down there.

As far as having a positive attitude I try to keep my chin up but to be completely truthful about it I am really worried about this country because what I see on the horizon is truly scary :(.

But with all the stuff I've learned on all these forums and all the books, magazines and just getting out in the wild and putting it to use has given me a lot of confidence. This couple I did some work for about a year ago>> GOD bless them because they were basically good people but they were truly yuppies that didn't have a clue. They had me start a fire in their fireplace because they didn't know how to start a fire without the use of a gas ignitor :eek:. How are people like that going to make it when things get real bad :( And I feel blessed because I truly do have a head start over many, many people. And I also believe in GOD>> But not the 501c3 version of GOD and that is what's kept me alive all these years.
