Round Bar Calculator?

I thought I recalled somebody mentioning a calculator that will tell you what size round bar you need to make a certain width and thickness of blade... can somebody point me in the right direction, please?

If I was halucinating...

I am looking into getting some O1 drill rod to forge and would like to end up with 1 1/4" x 3/16; seems 1" might be a bit big but maybe 3/4 is small. I guess I could always draw it out if it's big but the less time spent the better.

Thanks for any help.

It's a pretty basic spreadsheed, I could add a few instructions and if anybody wants it, P.M. me.

Well, I think I have P.M. ability... I should anyway, I paid for KM account over a week ago. :)

Make that e-mail. Send me an email and I'll send the spreadsheet.

The basic rule of thumb that I use is twice the diameter by 1/4" thick. You can get three times the diameter with some good hammer work. So for a one inch round you can get a two inch wide blade 1/4" thick. This allows for lots of clean up on the grinder.
With practice you can get a 16" camp knife from a 8" bar of 1" round.
