Round versus Oval hole showdown

I prefer the round hole overall. I think it looks better, and I think it's MUCH easier to flick.

That said, the oval hole does spyderdrop better.

What do you guys think?

The round hole works better. The force and direction of pressure on your thumb doesn't change as the blade swings open.

Thumbstuds or round holes - no ovals for me.

Doesn't matter to me, I generally have a slight prefernce for thumbstuds. I'll one-hand a nail nick if that's all the knife has, like my SERE.

I like ovals. Some round holes are a little too small and don't seem as easy to work with.

Ovals - they are oriented with the blades axis, so esthetics are better, take up less room, don't force the top of the blade into odd contours, and work just as good.

Of course, anything with a hole is considered tactical by the old women in HR who run the weapons policies. And not all of them use the ladies room.

They both work. The round hole is easier to do for most though because it is just a matter of drilling a hole which is lots easier than cutting one out unless you happen to own a laser.

Round works best for me, usually. The benchmade mini-skirmish's round opening hole is so beveled and small that it is just plain slippery.

9 posts so far an not a word about stealing intellectual property. I bet it does not make it to 15 :D

On "regular" blades, I prefer oval thumb holes (Mayo TNT's for example).
On wide blades, I prefer round holes (Spyderco Salsa for example).
Either are much better than thubstuds IMO. Thumbstuds :barf:

Not a huge fan of thumbstuds either. But I do like thumbdiscs. I have a SF Delta that has a large Byrd style hole with a thumbdisc that I have found to be very reliable.

I have more of a preference for thumb studs. But as far as holes go, I prefer Spyderco's holes.

Spidiehole is better than ovahole. Thumbstud is best, so far, if the point isn't too small.

I use the pad because it usually won't slip. My nail usually does and i don't want to try to perfect it.

I like the round hole, myself. Can you tell I have a few Spyderco's? Though the Byrd "comet" hole works just fine, and the oval holes I tried worked OK, they just didn't seem quite as good as the round hole to me.

By the way, Flava, I like your avatar. I grew up with a couple Bullmastiffs, including a 140 lb. (ripped) monster with a basketball sized head. The most friendly dog a nice person ever met, but he did have quite a protective streak to him.
