Jack, don't be offended by the chap in Woodalls. He's like that with everyone. I always think of his persona as a cross between an inbred farmer with cabin fever and the stereotype of an early 19th century British cavalry officer.
May I suggest you suffer another 20 minutes north on the Coastliner and find Pickering. There are 2 or 3 antiques shops (one of which calls itself an 'emporium') in which I've seen several old knives and sharp things over the years. There is also an outdoors shop in Market Place (no connection) that last time I was there I bought a Joker knife in olive wood.
The pub situation in Malton is quite dire. I don't know which one you went in but I suggest Suddabys, the Blue Bell or The Royal Oak in Old Malton, about a ten minute walk or 2 minutes on the Coastliner towards Pickering.

Really funny to read, especially since it reminded me of a similar encounter in a nice old Antique shop, ran by an elderly lady. She was kind and talkative to me, yet, another lady was in the store and the owner became rude to her, not just once, but, twice! The customer departed and I followed, soon afterwards! It was a shame to me because I was very interested in a nice old coffee grinder she displayed, one that I wanted and did not have a similar model. I was quite interested in it. I never went back, as I feared she would be rude to me and I just don't enjoy rudeness.
