Round Yorkshire With A Knife: The Joker & The Fool

Jack, don't be offended by the chap in Woodalls. He's like that with everyone. I always think of his persona as a cross between an inbred farmer with cabin fever and the stereotype of an early 19th century British cavalry officer.
May I suggest you suffer another 20 minutes north on the Coastliner and find Pickering. There are 2 or 3 antiques shops (one of which calls itself an 'emporium') in which I've seen several old knives and sharp things over the years. There is also an outdoors shop in Market Place (no connection) that last time I was there I bought a Joker knife in olive wood.
The pub situation in Malton is quite dire. I don't know which one you went in but I suggest Suddabys, the Blue Bell or The Royal Oak in Old Malton, about a ten minute walk or 2 minutes on the Coastliner towards Pickering.

a woman enters the shop to enquire about a bag, and the proprietor, who has been behaving very oddly throughout, is quite rude to her, for no reason I can see.

The strange experience leaves an unpleasant taste in my mouth, and after exploring the nearby high street, I decide to go for a pint to clear it away.

Ha Ha Ha Jack!! :D Really funny to read, especially since it reminded me of a similar encounter in a nice old Antique shop, ran by an elderly lady. She was kind and talkative to me, yet, another lady was in the store and the owner became rude to her, not just once, but, twice! The customer departed and I followed, soon afterwards! It was a shame to me because I was very interested in a nice old coffee grinder she displayed, one that I wanted and did not have a similar model. I was quite interested in it. I never went back, as I feared she would be rude to me and I just don't enjoy rudeness.

Your next decision to indulge in a pint caused laughter and I enjoyed your story, as always.:D

:)

Thanks a lot guys :)

Hi donn,

Thanks a lot for the tips, very much appreciated. As it so happens, I called in at Pickering on my way to Whitby last Saturday, and I was very impressed with the outdoor shop. I even bought another Joker knife - in olive wood!

It was a bit of a flying visit, but I'll definitely be up for a return trip. I need to upload my pics and I'll post about it soon :)

In Malton, I ended up having a pint at the pub at the end of the market place, I'm afraid I forget the name, it serves a lot of food and has a few seats outside.

Aye thats the chap. My first and only knife with olive wood scales, a lovely material.
Looking forward to your Pickering pics. Your posts give me ideas for days out :)

Thanks again sir, it's a lovely part of the county :)

I gave my friend ScruffUK the choice of the two Joker knives. He's plumped for the bubinga model, so the olive wood one is mine :)

Nice knife. I like the "JOKER" on it. Jack "The Joker" Black? :D

BTW, feel free to include Pint/Knife Pictures in the future. :)

I love your threads, it seems odd to log on to the forum and see "Yorkshire" in the feed.
I come from and live near Richmond and and there are loads of old boy's like the chap in Woodall's knocking about.
Thanks
Lee:)

:D Thanks my friend, here's one just for you! ;)

Thanks a lot Lee, I have been hoping to get up to Richmond for the past few weeks, but the weather and various other factors have put my plans awry. One day hopefully

Thanks for the great read Jack! Always a pleasure:) I really like the Joker's, they look strikingly similar to the Aitors
I think Scruff was being kind to you snatching the bubinga ;)

Cheers Duane, it was a blind choice for Scruff, he hasn't seen either yet, but he likes bubinga (as do I), and the F & F is very slightly better on the bubinga model - on the olive, the blade is very slightly off centre and the spring sits slightly proud in the closed position.
