Round Yorkshire With A Knife: The Wizard’s Quest Part 12 – Don’t Tell Titus!

Jack, I think we need to contact the Travel Channel, for you my friend could give Anthony Bourdain a run for his money. Rick Steves would be in some serious trouble. May I suggest ....Follow my Leeds with Jack Black

Another fun trip, Jack!!
I like the parts when you run from two-named witches!!
You never know what they can do to an innocent feller like yourself!:D

Thanks for your kind comments folks :)

Those fbs might be worth another look if they get prices on them. The one in back looks like a kabar to me, the Italian looks awfully ornate for ww2, and the big chopper in front looks very cool. I wonder where that's from.
Is a whittle-tang what I call a rat-tail tang? long and narrow, surrounded by handle material, and fixed at the end with a nut or by peening?

I'll have another look my friend, but I reckon the prices will be high (higher than they should be). I had a look at the Bowie, it's one of the Sheffield 'town patterns', and still made today. Couldn't make out the maker on this one. Yes, a whittle-tang is just the traditional Sheffield name for a rat-tail or stick tang :)

Hi Jack -That was an epic quest.Nice going mate (I hope you can forgive for the Sheffield Spur thread-I'd had a few and meant it merely as a an example of perhaps what to look for).
With that in mind as the weather improves so it would seem does the hunting.
A couple of contenders there for sure. How long was that butcher knife out of interest? Correct me if I'm wrong but WWII hadn't happened in 1933 yet.A definite chink in the bargaining armour.
Knowledge is power.

Sorry Meako, I'd completely missed this post until now. I think it's safe to say that if I see a collection of fine Sheffield Bowies on my travels, I won't pass them by without comment!

Yes, as the weather improves, more should be on offer. It's been a p*** wet winter here and I've seen a good deal of it.

The owner of the shop with the three large knives knows next to nothing about them, or about cutlery in general, which is part of the problem unfortunately.

The Large Ibberson's knife has a blade of 12". A bit specialised, but a really nice piece with some unique history I think. Interested? What else did you like the look of?

Not that I necessarily remember you having a say in it! ;)

Here you did.

VM:

Is there anything you're after from over here, any patterns you've got an eye out for?

And here.

PM:

Hope you saw my VM :)

And here:

Email:

Is there anything I can send you from over thisaway?

And

Let me know if I can send you anything over :)

But after choosing to ignore those messages in favour of this (below), I think your say in it pretty much went out of the window my friend! ;) :D

Jack you are to search the places of Sheffield and its outlying villages and towns that you know of for a knife for me that must adhere to the following guidelines-
*Must be made in Sheffield
*Must not cost more than $60.00AUD(for which I will provide the funds once the knife has been located)
*May be new or used
*May be a folding or fixed blade knife eg pocketknife or kitchen knife or Bowie.
*Must have handles of natural material
*Must have that certain special something.
*Must be able to be sent in the post to Mt Keira NSW so must not be a bayonet or double edged dagger.

When I find that 'special' neon-pink butter-knife, I'll let you know ;) :D

Jack

Yes .. another great story and many thanks. How did you get round all those towns in one day ? You must be an early riser.
I picked up one of those Richards kits in Huddersfield last year and a few days later I saw another in Wiltshire in the south of England. I had never seen one before. Sorry for the lack of posts. We are away again soon so I will look out for new [old] stuff.
Regards to all.

13 is a special number! Whether you are superstitious or not!
Much as I like these Quest episodes, and want them to continue for the foreseeable future, I had a vision that #13 would produce something fantastic!!! Whether it's the right knife or not!!
I guess we will see!!

I am, but it wasn't too hard, didn't get the bus from Leeds to Shipley until nearly 10.00am. Shipley and Saltaire are minutes apart, and Keighley is not all that far away (it's the same bus route as the Leeds-Shipley bus). The Keighley-Ilkley service is a handy link, and goes through some more great countryside, and then Ilkley to Otley is very straightforward on the Leeds-Skipton route :)

thanks again, almost missed this one, glad I didn't :)

I hope so too. I'm off to the North Yorkshire market town of Settle tomorrow, but probably won';t get a chance to write up my adventures until next week. Whether I find THE knife then or not, I will of course continue to post my adventures, but probably only when there is better knife content! :D

This just in....apparently it's not all about the knives....more of this shocking report later.
