Rounded screws on my Military

Also, if i recall correctly, a couple of my millies had red locktite on the scale screws, so i always assume it's there when i take down a knife and use precautions (soldering iron) when doing so.

I have read that if you are over seas that Spyderco will send parts many times because of how expensive shipping is. I would tell them where you are located and that the screws came that way. I would not have paid the $25 if you honestly did not strip them out. Tell them the problem is still there and you can't afford to send the knife half way around the world again and you would be very greatful if they could send a couple sets of screws since you have paid so much money trying to get it fixed. If you didn't strip the screws make it 100% clear that you didn't do it.

I haven't had the best luck with customer service the few times I have contacted them. Just the fact they will void the warranty because a knife was taken apart and the problem is completely unrelated doesn't rate very highly with me. Once they know you took the knife apart they won't even look at a warranty issue regardless of what it is. It's not in the written warranty and if a person didn't cause the damage it should be repaired no matter what happened if it is a legitimate problem with the knife. IMO.

i like spyderco, and spyderco knives... so when i emailed spyderco, i put my faith in them to repair it. I didn't dismantle my military because i couldn't, and sent it over because i am not able to remove the screws myself. I'm afraid to damage my military by using excess force or methods to remove those screws. Anyway, i emailed another representative last night and they should be sending me a set of screws. Looks like i'll still have to figure out ways to remove those screws

Ah, great to meet another Spyderco lover from South East Asia.

As for our problem with removing the rounded out torx screws, I used a step larger torx driver on the rounded out screw, tapped it a bit with a hammer just to drive it deeper into the screw for it to bite, then, successfully got out the rounded out screw! And no damage at all to the scales as long as you are careful and don't use too much force. Now, my millie is missing two torx screws now and had to place those left on the far ends of the scales. Tried looking for torx screws that small here in the Philippines. Couldn't find any. Tsk.

Oh well, it doesn't diminish my use and enjoyment of the knife, anyway!

They make something called an easy out. The smallest one has worked great removing the small screws on folders. Most hardware stores should have them. You drill a small hole in the head of the screw and insert the easy out and turn counterclockwise. It has reverse threads that dig into the screw and gets tighter as you unscrew the stripped screw. Check one out.

I received the screws and an additional clip that i requested for, but i was told that if i continue to damage my screws, they will charge me for it. If it's my fault, i'll definitely be willing to pay for it. Person 'A' said that additional screws and clip will be sent together with my 'repaired' knife a month ago, but i only received my knife. So i asked for what's missing and i get this reply? Seriously, i find it kind of rude...
Anway, i followed the advice given by jmaniac and managed to remove the stripped screws. I reassembled everything with the new screws sent to me, and now all is good. My military can be disassembled and reassembled without any problems. Thanks everyone :)

my 2 cents the military is the only knife i have messed up the screws,i got all the bits,it is like the screws are soft or shallow the bit does not break and no mater what tip you use you they will Slip.
In my experience this is true.

I have a new military. The scale screws and the clip screws are both T6 torx head screws. The scale screws which are flat head have a noticeably shallower torx recess than the button head clip screws. The scale screws would strip fairly easily if one isn't careful removing /installing them, There is also more slop/play when the torx bit is installed than the button head variety. Be sure to use a good amount of downward pressure when removing them. You can obtain replacement scale screws from http://www.fastener-express.com/2-5...ad-150--t-6-drive-stainless-torx-qty-100.aspx

This is what I would also suggest, and not only on Spyderco's. Make sure the torx is in the screw as it should be, apply the down force, and then screw it out. I sometimes will lay the knife on my work table so I can apply more downward pressure.

I have but three Spyderco's, but have had all of them apart and have not stripped the heads on any of them. But I be sure to apply that downward pressure! I have the titanium Military, Perrin PPT, and the Vallotton Sub-Hilt.
