everytime i get a new rough rider it just blows me away how good they have become . just got a gunstock canoe, wow ....

Hi,

I don't own many RR's, (just 2), but the quality is very good for the price. They're excellent users and look pretty good to boot. While many China made knives are often pretty poor, RR's show that the Chinese can make a decent blade for a very good price if they want to. I hope they continue to do well.

The recent RR Scout knife I got is an eye-opener.Good all round quality, looks nice in Amber jigged bone and is well-finished,springs a bit heavy but I can put up with that for under 8 dollars:D

I have been wanting one of the scout knives but I am picky and want to examine it before i buy.is there a dealer out there that will examine the knife before they ship it,I hate returning things.

Well, for $13. (@ SMKW) I would just buy it and see what you get. I've only had one issue with RR knives, and SMKW replaced it for free.

I'm going to get the scout knife here soon, along with a marlin spike knife, when they get them back in. The nice thing about RR is you can try out any pattern you want and not pay a fortune. I'll never give up my Case knives, but I like the RR's for what they are - inexpensive, reasonably well made, and good users as well.

thx - cpr

I bought this Rough Rider leg knife for my girlfriend 'cause I thought she would get a kick out of it. I am very impressed with the quality. She loves it. She told me, of all the knives I have given her, this is her favorite. (I haven't given her the Case mother of pearl peanut, I bought for her birthday, yet)

When I ordered the leg knife, I also ordered a couple other Rough Riders to check them out. Here is a trapper. I expected to give it as a gift but I like it so much I have decided to carry it myself. I never thought I would like a ******* made knife enough to carry it.

Here is the scout knife I ordered. I really like this knife and decided to keep it also. I am very impressed with it.

But not all the Rough Riders I ordered that day are keepers. This mother of pearl small stockman isn't nearly as nice. It is an okay knife and the mother of pearl is flawless. Flawless but lifeless. It is worth the twelve dollars I paid for it even though it does not have the abalone shield as advertised (Smoky Mountain Knife Works). Still, I decided not to return it. I will give it as a gift, probably to a young niece. Not a bad knife. Just not as nice as the other three Rough Riders I bought.

Me either, but I've changed my mind over the last couple of years. My favorite import slipjoint is a Steel Warrior Trapper, very similar to yours. It has the strongest springs of any import I own.

I bought one MOP Rough Rider, and while the knife was very well made, the MOP wasn't very nice at all. (Certainly doesn't compare to Case MOP, but then again, not much does.) I got the impression someone had polished a piece of shell. It was somewhat pretty, but no "figure" and almost no luminescence; "lifeless" would be a good description. Later, I ordered a Rough Rider MOP Canoe from bobticeknives.com; paid $30. for it, but it's got really nice MOP. Even at $30., it was a bargain compared to some of the other brands I've seen.

I also ordered a MOP Stockman from Waxman knifeworks, and same thing - good price, well made, but mediocre MOP.

I've got several more RR knives coming to round out the summer; I'll post what I get when they arrive.

I've had a few RR's,they are a good looking knife,i "think"they would be alot better if they had carbon blades like the old Imperials and Colonials had.Something about that shiny stainless that i can't come to grips with.I've owned 3 RR's,none of them held a decent edge, ended up giving them away.I guess there's to many old Case's,Schrades,Bokers in pawn shops and on ebay for me to get too enthused about RR's.But,thats just me though,to each his own.

The jigging and overall quality of the bone in those red bone knives above is astounding. Is the color "fast", though? That is, if you get the knife wet do to the scales bleed pigment?

I have a Chinese Marbles, and while it has some decent style points (great F&F, flush springs, even blades, matchstrike nail nicks, and not "overdone" as so many Chinese knives are) the color just pours out of it when you get it wet. First time it happened I thought I cut myself badly .

All right, I give. I ordered a couple for my kids, a peanut and a congress. Guess we"ll see how they turn out. For the $20 they cost (combined with shipping) it is not like it is a big risk.

Yosemite - yes, the color will bleed if the knife gets wet. I wash every one I buy in warm water, then use a garden hose to get the grit out of the joint. That usually gets rid of the extra pigment.

The RR Saw Bone has fluted bolsters, which makes for an attractive knife.
Given most away as presents!

Both of the ones I had needed mega-cleaning to remove all the grit. As well, I have yet to have one where all blades had deep enough nail nicks to use. On my Sunfish, it took about 10 seconds with a Dremel on both blades. The RR Scout I picked up needed it on both screwdriver and awl, with the awl's weird grind leading me to accidentally make it Scagelesque.

After being VERY disappointed by my first RR, I gave it away immediately, I went back and tried it again.
This Copperhead I actually really like, -------.

I think this is going in my rotation.

Gentlemen, I think it's been sufficiently well established that these knives are made in China.
