RR spike knives-pics

Looks promising

All the RR spike knives I've ever seen were twisted. Do you have a pic of something finished with your wire wrap and leather handle? Also, how are you planning to harden them? If the spikes are too low carbon to harden in water, you might try blacksmith's superquench. it's a homemade mixture of water, dish soap and some sort of wetting agent like Jet Dry for automatic dish washing machines.

I'll be hardening them and then doing the polish over the weekend, when I get more propane for the forge. I'm trying for a step-by step documentation of what they look like along the way to becoming a knife. I've done a few with the leather and wire handle, and they turned out well, but they left my hands pretty quick. I'll post more pics after I have them polished, then when the handles are on.
For hardening, I was thinking of a brine quench. I added some carbon to them while forging, so it should work. Since I have the two, I think I'll try your recipe, too. I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks for the input.

Hey Osbourn,
I was at my back Dr.'s office yesterday and was talking to a man in the waiting room who is making knives from railroad spikes.
Was that you?

Chiro, as a matter of fact, they are. I used to make them for a few retail sellers, and occasionally sold them directly. If I can get another leather source, I will again, but until then, they're just a picture on the site. They're fun at parties, though.
Misque, could be. Did this guy look rather young, have three feet of brown hair, wear a black leather jacket and blue prescription glasses? If so, that was me.

No Oz, I don't think so.
This man had both hands in casts, was middle aged and, shall we say, looked like his better days were behind him.
A heck of a nice guy though, and full of info he was more than willing to share.
This is one of the things that I greatly admire in knifemakers.
I've never met one that was not willing to help you with any Q's you might have about the subject of knives.
The knife community is a community wrought with friendly people, always willing to help wherever and however they can.
