I don't forge many of these mainly because they are a pain to make. There is just not too much material in a rr spike-I added some filework to the front edge, the haft is ash burnt pretty heavily, steel wooled and tung oil then buffed on beeswax-Very light little hawk, hope you likee:DRegards Butch

That is a bit different. :)
Looks pretty effective too. You don't need much material to spike some...thing.

Hey Butch, Try using the head of the spike to make the blade. You've got that giant poof on the bad of this hawk that I figure you could make an even wider bit. You may even be able to make a bearded ax with a spike on the other end. Just a thought. Great hawk though

Thanks,I have done that before, but I like it to look like a rr spike.I upset the spike end to get more material for the blade---Regards Butch:thumbup:

dang - Just when I think you can not top the last one, you do. You, sir, are running on all cylinders! Keep it up. MD

Butch, nice forge work. Nifty little hawk, I have to try one someday. You like my grinding, I like your hot hammering. I need to mash some more metal. Winter is coming.

Yes I did more grinding this summer, than I usually do,heat is rough on an old joker like myself.I sure am glad it's cooling off here, and forging is kind of addictive. You are really doing some great work, still like my knife you made:thumbup:Keep up the good work----Regards Butch

I think 90% of it is practice practice and pay attention to what happens and works. I am no spring chicken but, am only 57. I didn't get your name this year in the exchange, if you got mine I would swing a hawk with my right hand :D

Hate to disapoint Jim,afraid I got someone else this year:grumpy:.Yes it takes a lot of hammering, you need to find someone in your area who forges,I'm sure there are more than you think. It would really shorten your learning curve:thumbup:Regards Butch

The spine (is it called a spine on a hawk, or is that just knives?) looks unbelievable. Superb job, sir.
