During lunch today I went for a walk down the RR track near my work and found a bunch of RR tie clips laying in the dirt and grass from a recent rail replacement job. I collected about 90 of them and then I found a shipping ticket from the manufacturer. I looked them up and called the place explaining that I was a knife maker and I was wondering if they could they tell me what the clips were made of. The lady who answered the phone said that we can't give that info out...Then she Say's hold on.. The next thing I knew I'm talking to a guy in R&D and he Say's that the RR clips are basically 1060 with a few tricks. Apparently they can be heat treated like 1060 and should give me an as quenched hardness of 58-62 RC, then temper down from there. The clips are 1" X 5/8" X 11".. I can see some Bowie's and choppers coming up soon..
