RTAK dilemma

::sigh:: I really want an RTAK II but part of me really has an issue ordering anything from Ontario given the current legal battle with RAT Cutlery...

But, on the other hand... the RTAK is a RAT designed knife...

But... I would have to buy it from Ontario...

So, you see my problem...

::sigh::

I bought one off a fellow forumite. That way I wasn't giving my money to Ontario. I was giving it to a fellow knife guy. Moral dilema solved!

I need a 12" machete for this season but I refuse to buy anything from Ontario so I'm keeping my eyes peeled for a used one on the exchange.

Hmmm... so... if I were to buy an RTAK II on ebay... then... technically I would be giving my money to some guy on Ebay and not to Ontario...

But I can't get away from the fact that eventually the $$ ends up with Ontario :barf:

However, if you buy it from someone who already purchased it and is selling it, then you aren't giving Ontario anything. He already made the mistake and in an effort to right his wrong, he has decided to cleanse himself the whole situation and just wants some money to get a different knife. All you're doing is helping him do this and paying for his next knife. For that, he's giving you the RTAKII. Or you could just buy the damn thing and don't worry about it. The knife is worth every penny, even if you have to buy it from a company that purchased it from bunch of dickweeds. It's by far my favorite chopper. It would be different if RAT already had a giant chopper to buy. Since they haven't started making one yet, the next best thing is to get the big chopper that they designed. It's all you can do till they come out with one.

Thanks for the responses :) I think I'll watch the exchange section for a while and if one doesn't pop up within a month or so I'll get one from someone on Ebay - I like the "helping them buy a new knife" rationalization :D

I want a nice chopper to use while camping and kayaking - but I don't want to carry around a machete. I've seen the RTAK do some decent wood splitting on YouTube too which is great because it means I won't have to try to fit a hatchet in my kayak...

IZULA in the pocket, RTAK in the pack... And the second RAT comes out with an RTAK style knife I will cleanse myself by buying one and selling the RTAK again on ebay :)

I have been watching it as well. As far as the chopper goes, I believe RAT will come out with one eventually, and that will undoubtably be one of the best production choppers  (If not all choppers :D )

Mike, Jeff, note -- business opportunity above.

Just a thought. Not many really good 12 inch machetes around. Pretty handy item to have, eh?

I too would like R.A.T. to make a big chopping knife.

To tide me over until that day I'm going to order either a Tora MKIV Forces Kukri or a Ka-Bar Machete Cutlass (I'll probably go for the Ka-Bar because it's cheaper).

It's one of the basic needs in my life. If it had a RAT logo on it, all the better.

the RAT cutlery RTAK will be in the works one day as for the machete kinda odd venture if you ask me ,it would be great if they did but why ? why pay $75-150 for a machete does not make sense to me but I guess BRK&T can do it by reworking a Ontario, I love to see a 3/16th. 12"-14" Rc4 Machete type thing with the RC6 scales...

That is always the argument against it... no one would buy it. But I'm not so sure there aren't people who WOULD pay the price. I, for example, would DEFINITELY pay $75-$150 to get a really well made machete versus an Ontario or import. And, furthermore, I would MUCH rather have a well made 12" - 14" machete than I would ANY big knife. I just find it much more useful.

Features that would make it worthwhile for me would be good steel and heat treat, obviously. A good handle material like canvas micarta that has the right amount of friction and won't fall off after a while like my old slippery Ontarios did. And a bit of a point on the end, rather than a big upswept tip. I, myself, would not care for any finish on the blade. Machetes get beat and finish would just look like crap in no time. Bare steel can always be run over a belt to bring it back like new. Finally, a convex edge and little distal taper would be excellent. Oh and a good SHEATH for crying out loud with proper attachment options!

Check out Condor. Lots of goodies for the avid machete slinger. :D

I suppose RAT will eventually do an over-priced machete ;)

Perfect. The "non over-priced" ones just don't get the job done for me. Marginal steel. $0.05 grind jobs. Lousy handles. Floppy sheaths.

Machetes have so much more potential than that. They are the IDEAL long blade if done right. And you all should have a pretty good idea of how to do them right...

I'll be waitin'. :D
