RTAK II or New BK 9 - Decisions Decisions

i have both an original newt livesay rtak and a bk9 tan, the bk9 is a lot handier to carry than the rtak, they both chop well, i owuld reccomend the bk9, too bad the brute is not available, i have one and it is a brute.

I have an original Ontario RTAK and it's is without a doubt one of the best production choppers out there.

I've had both and they are good knives (well not the new Becker but an older BK&T Combat Bowie).

I found the Becker easier to sharpen, held a sharper edge and more rigid but the RTAK II was far tougher and felt heavier so they were equal on the chopping front. On the negative front the RTAK II had a horrible amount of flex in the blade and a couple of times when it got stuck and I yanked on it I really felt uncomfortably close to it breaking (i'm not saying it would have but it flexed a fair bit). The only negatives about the Becker was the lack of weight in the blade making it for me less efficient a chopper, also the blade was softer so when I hit a small rock accidently it rolled the edge pretty bad. The RTAK II took almost no from any of the accidents like this I had.

I would probably say go for the Dogfather if you can afford it. The Becker and RTAK II are pretty unbeatable for price though. Whatever you get be sure to take it out for a beating and post the pics.

I hear a lot of guys talking about Busse, Swamp Rat and Scrap Yard knives. I have been to the web sites...and what I want to know is: How do you even buy one? I know you can get them second hand on the exchange, but can you get them new?

I believe there are a couple smaller knives offered for sale on the Busse combat site, and Scrapyard just finished a sale offering on Monday. SY seems to only sell one knife at a time, and it is a pre-order purchase only. I do not know what is going on with Swamp Rat.

Triquetra, I understand your dilemma. I started a similar thread in the "General Discussion" forum. I decided to go with the BK9 per discussion on the forum. I haven't handled either knife, but I am anxiously waiting for my BK9 along with the free BK13 to arrive.

Agent Iron,

Here is another link to the general forum where the combo sale is discussed along with Ethan Becker's input http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=600692

That is a great little deal...I wish I would have noticed that. It appears they are out of stock at New Graham at present. Maybe I will get one with my order from Tomar....but I will not hold me breath. Congratulations on your purchase!
