rubber contact wheels or steel?

Well this thread became more interesting. Thank you all for the thoughtful responses. I will post a pic of the wheel to the thread and contact Rob. To be very clear however, this thread was NOT intended to point out a defective wheel or in any way be sour about the KMG.

No worries Keith, I know you weren't trying to bash anybody. You're just trying to get a problem ironed out. Everybody knows that Rob makes quality products but mistakes/defects do occasionally happen. I'm sure Rob will do what it takes to get you fixed up.

Darrin,

Nice to hear from you. I have some fun projects I finished up recently and I have a cool little threesome of knives for my father and his two brothers I am about to wrap up too. I'll see about posting some pics up. One of those blades is a smaller version of the one you made me. It's pretty cool! Hope you are staying busy!

Well this would be my first attempt at a photo. Hopefully you can see how the wheel has worn. The left side is quite a bit more worn than the right side. You can also see how weird the wear pattern is. It almost looks like it cupped.

In a quick inspection of the unit, my wheels are all over the place. So the first thing I am going to do is get them all running true to each other...

Thanks.

I'm just taking a wild guess here but I'm thinking the rubber on that wheel is much softer than it was listed as being. It should be extremely firm/hard and you should not be able to make an indention when you press on it.
That cupping looks as if tracking could be a problem. Have you been having any tracking issues? I'm curious as to exactly what the problem is. Maybe someone who has seen it before will chime in, if not let us know what Rob has to say.
That set for your dad and uncles sounds like a cool project. I'd love to see some pics when you get a chance.

Did you work the inside of that wheel more that the outside?
I have never seen a hard rubber wheel wear like that.

I just got to thinking if something was binding the wheel in the bearing area. It may be binding somewhere just enough to slightly slow the wheel and make the belt slip and cause the wear. Just a thought.

Or, maybe the screws are too tight and the overheated bearings are softening that wheel.

I don't think it is from uneven use. Believe it or not, I don't really use it as a contact wheel all that often. It was really only the last couple of knives that I started to use it at all. Before that, I was using my oscillating sander much more.

Also, I suppose it could be getting hot from the bearings, but it runs pretty smooth. If I grab it and spin it, it does so freely - similar to the lower wheel.

Tracking is not an issue either. It tracks fine using the tracking knob.

I will say though, the wheels really are a long way off from being centered with respect to one another. The drive wheel, especially, is much different.

Rob's site is down for maintenance, so I will wait for it to come back up and shoot him and email. I need to buy a few items from him anyhow to upgrade a bit, so another wheel shouldn't be a huge deal. I just want to get the unit going properly to prevent wearing the next one out just as fast!

Darrin,

I'll send you a link to my photobucket albums. I have a few pics in there of recent blades. This project is about 10 days away from being complete. The "brothers three" knives are pretty cool and have a story behind them too. Good stuff.

Keith

Yep,

I have one that looks similar
