I'm currently putting a handle on a spyderco mule using horse mat material from recycled tires. I like the concept but the material is a bit softer than what I would like. Does anyone have a suggested better source of rubber, harder rubber maybe for knife blanks?

My work place stocks all thicknesses of rubber in rolls. 1/16 - 1/2". Don't know where it comes from though, some industrial supply?.

I put leather on a couple mules as temporary handles till I get my horse apple (osage orange) scales cut and dried. They are surprisingly very comfortable.

Look up a material called TeroTuf, that is what you are looking for.

TeroTuf looks good I will look to use it in the future but it does not seem as rubberized - how is it when it is wet?

Grippy as micarta, if not more, when they are comparably sanded.
The fibers extend beyond the surface a touch and this adds to the surface area adding to the traction. This even happens with micarta (as long as it isn't polished), to the tune that when sanded 400 grit or higher, it is often More Grippy when wet.
