Rubber powered slingshots

Don,
I have shot lots of critters with a slingshot and still have my original wristrocket from the late 70s. I carry one almost everywhere I go in the woods. My ammo of choice is 45 cal lead balls, I cast my own from wheel weights. I have shot cottontails and have had full penetration and have killed blacktailed jackrabbits also.

Squirrels are quite a bit tougher and I have shot more than I have recovered, to kill a squirrel you need to be close and hit the head or spine. I have knocked lots out of a tree and had them hit the ground running. Squirrels are tough little critters and I will depend on snares or deadfalls over my wristrocket to quietly get them in the pot. Chris

EDIT: My trusty pocket rocket is pure death on any bird I have ever hit with it, all birds are edible and are an easy way to put a bit of meat in your rice.

Well this thread made me want a slingshot, so I went for a walk earlier and found a nice fork, cut it to the right size, whittled off uncomfortable lumps, sanded it and then put on a coat of some wood stuff, lol. It is drying now. I'd say I spent about 40-50 mins on it in total.

squirrels are significantly tougher thn bunnies...when I was a sprout I toppeld quite af ew bunnies with my wrist rocket..and my trusty crosman american classic pellet pistol....the pistol would drop a squirrel with a opinted pellet..but I've blasted a few squirrels with direct body hits from glass marbles and have had them as RB said "hit the ground running"

Has anyone here tried killing a magpie or a crow with a slingshot?

I was successful, only twice (magpies). LOTS of patience required, but the end result was far more rewarding than using a rifle.

I used to spend way too much time on the slingshot forum:

Several of the guys there make and sell bands and custom "ergo" slingshots. They are very knowledgeable.

For production slingshots, Trumark still makes "wrist-rocket" type slingshots at its plant in Boulder CO. You can order direct

Ray Preist is a great guy and has a great selection of slingshots:

I use slingshots to teach archery. We shoot paintballs at wood targets. A lot of fun.

There is also slingshot paintball. I think there is a group that plays in Idaho.

Chris,

Maryland and Virginia grays must be sissyassed little squirrels. :D

I'll tell you one thing though, I hit an Old Tom three times with a .12 Ga., knocked him off the branch, he went up the side of the tree and I dusted him off on another branch, knocked him down again and then nailed him on the side of the tree. He was so full of shot I wouldn't eat him. I felt like shit and buried him on the spot. That's the last time I ever hunted with a .12 Ga. (I'm not into bird hunting so a .12 just isn't for me as far as using shot is concerned.) I am a confirmed .22 LR guy when it comes to small game now, as far as firearms are concerned, anyway. Never had trouble with a squirrel and a wristrocket though. You are right, squirrels are tough-as-nails. I guess I just always smacked them in the chest good enough that it killed them outright. A lot were in the head as well. A few in the neck, they went down just as hard.

That's no lie, they're deadly on various squab. 8-)
