Looking for a RUCKSACK to carry some gizmos, gadgets and gear. Also, sometimes, a rainjacket or sweater, hat, lunch, dog's frisbee, water bottle, etc.
Here's what I'm hoping to find:
Simple and rugged design.
High quality construction of the best materials.
Good rain resistance (livin' in the NW).
Top load (not zipper panel) with rain flap and outside pocket.
1500-2000 cubic inches.
Natural fiber (heavy waxed cotton, canvas, hemp)...maybe some leather in heavy wear areas.
No wacky colors and a minimum of logos/labels.

I suggest a Gregory. I have the Chaos-X and think it is close to what you want, maybe too big. http://www.gregorypacks.com/

Here are links to two images of packs we carry that pretty much fit the bill. They are ballistic nylon, not natural fiber, and, they are guaranteed for life. One is 1110 cubic inches and the other is 2254 cubic inches. Both are available on our website, along with a bunch more. http://albums.photopoint.com/j/ViewPhoto?u=1092947&a=9512486&p=31270607 http://albums.photopoint.com/j/ViewPhoto?u=1092947&a=9512486&p=31270608

Hope this helps.

Check Play it Again Sports, or similar used sporting goods stores near you. I still use the rucksack I picked up about 7 years ago from them for 10 bucks. I think ballistic nylon is a pretty common material, I don't know how firm you are in getting organic cloth.

Best I've found is LL Bean's Continental Rucksack. But no fabric is perfectly waterproof. Store cameras, etc. in a roll-top waterproof bag like they use for whitewater rafting.

I've got a small Arcteryx which, while not natural materials, is very plain (all black) and waterproof. It's very well made.

Sorry I didnt see the natural fiber thing when I first posted. look a Duluth Packs

I've had a European made "Jura" leather rucksack with an internal frame that has served me well for nearly 20 yrs. Using Snow Seal for water repellancy, I've never had a problem with the elements. I was unable to find any information on the Jura brand/trademark but The Northerner has a very good selection of leather rucksacks from which to choose. Have fun shopping!
