Ruger 10/22 in 22LR OR Remington 700 Mountain Rifle 243 Win

Thanks you all, I mean it.

Overall, I'm hearing keep the .22 LR and save for a 30.06 or ? How does a .270 fit in here?

With the ever increasing assortment of fashionable Yuppie short magnums out there these days (get out your wallet!) there still is absolutely nothing out there to beat 30 caliber 1906 for economy and versatility. 308 (7.62 NATO) is a second choice but is in fact merely a shortened 06 case for newer (1950s) powders and isn't quite as adaptable as the 06, but is a good choice if you want medium-chamber length guns.
270 is a necked-down 06 dating from the late-1920s. Hot commercial shell (back then and still is) that didn't eat out barrels like a 220 Swift but still you're stuck with the expense of factory ammo. Only real drawback to 06 is it kicks like a mule with standard loads which is why (as a handloader) I'm still out there quite content with an 1890s 30-40 Springfield Krag.

Keep the .22, its a great shooter and great hunter for small game. .243 is a great round, but as others have stated it is overkill for small game.... I have only trade/sold one of my guns ever, sure enough I regretted it very soon. Just save up for the larger rifle you want and keep the 10/22. You will not be sorry.

The 270 win is my caliber of choice for thin skinned big game. Does that answer your question about the 270? :D Actually I have shifted to using revolvers for deer hunting over the last 5 years or so. I just don't care as much anymore if I "score" or not. I just like to be out there... but then, when the time comes to make a shot, I do everything in my power to make it a good one. When I started using a handgun, I started carrying binocs with me religiously and after using them.... I wondered why on earth I didn't carry them for years? (Ans. I only had some cheapie binocs and didn't like using them.) I just don't think it very "cool" to see some movement in the woods and pull up my rifle to check out the "movement".

My first "deer rifle" was in fact a 243 win. After a couple deer, I decided that I wanted something with a bit more oomph and since my Dad always used a 30-06, being the rebelious kid, I chose 270 win.

Keep the Ruger 10-22. Save up and get the 30-06. Most barrels will shoot 150 - 180 grain bullets quite accurately. The 270 is flat shooting and will handle any game in North America but the 06 will handle the larger game better. I rate the recoil from an 06 and a 270 the same.

Between 30-06 and 270 just pick one and go with it. The differences between the two are not that huge unless you are hand loading and want bigger bullets where the 30-06 has an advantage.

THANK YOU ALL! I love this place! I will keep the .22lR! Plain and simple. I am now looking at a .270. I know someone who has a Savage 110 w/accutrigger w/Simmons 3X9 scope .270 for $500 ( that's a asking price?)

Thoughts on the Savage or anything else. I am learning more than I thought I ever would. And -- you all are more knowledgable than Dad. God rest his soul. He was great man.

If you upgrade the scope it will be a fair deal. You can get a savage axis (non adj trigger) with a Leopold 3x9 for < $500 without the tax.

30-06 doesn't recoil hard at all. But I guess it is subjective.

I would look into 7mm 08 if i were you. It's one of the best calibers I have ever shot.. I love tikka and I have 4 of them in differnt calibers (7mag 30-06 270 win and 7mm08) and I always go back to the 7mm08 I have never had a deer move after being shot with that gun and I have killed many many deer with it!

Rat, I live on Long Island in NY so anything fire arm related out here gets some sideways looks. That was a joke.

At the risk of repetition, keep the .22 and get the .30-06 or the 270.......the .30-06 vs .270 debate is a whole other can of worms...

Once again, thanks to everybody. I guess I've always thought that in addition to a .22 LR, one needs something with a little more, Oomph. I'm leaning towards a .270 to fill that void. I'll never hunt Elk or Moose or Bear. Whitetail deer would prolly be the largest animal. With that in mind, wouldn't a .270 be able to handle a deer?
