This is for people who shoot their 1022 alot. Approximately how many rounds can you fire out of your 1022 without cleaning or other attention before it starts to jam or have problems? How far do you have to disassemble it and what do you have to do to it minimum to clean it and make it reliable again? Do you find you can go longer with some ammo than with others? Have you experienced any parts breakages or other problems with your 1022 after using it hard or for long periods of time?
I know the 1022 has a great reputation and that you should clean your rifle after each use and that you should love and respect your equipment and never let people who don't treat their equipment like the jewels that they are ever touch your equipment but that is not what this thread is about so if that is all you have to add to this thread I already said it here.
I have a Marlin model 60 that I have to at least put some BreakFree in every 100? rounds or so to keep it functioning without a total takedown/cleanup but I do have to say it is an accurate rifle. With the Rugers reputation I would think it would function a lot longer but I have never seen anyone mention how long theirs will go and what they have to do to keep it functioning for that long.
Thanks for any info you can share.

We shoot tons with the kids, and I don't clean as I should. Between 3 10/22s, we shoot around 3-4 bricks probably before I blast them out with disc brake cleaner. Yes, it will remove some finishes, but not our rifles so far :D Pretty much only shoot Fed Value packs.

I'm pretty sure it went 10 years and several thousand rounds without cleaning when I first got mine. after 26 years, the springs are getting weak on my factory & extended mags, so it may be time to clean or replace them.

avoid wax coated bullets, too - those gum it up faster.
federal bulk pack HP's, CCI minimags, etc... all seem to do pretty well in mine.

as far as cleaning - every so often I remove the stock, pull the trigger group, and spray everything down with gun scrubber until there's no waxy buildup inside/behind/around the bolt.
for quick field cleaning I just run a bore snake through it a couple of times with some break free CLP, then follow with a couple of dry patches.

does that help?

I have both of the guns mentioned. I can easily run a 550rnd. box of Federals through both, with no issues. I always clean after that, but I would think one could run them harder.

Maybe the the Ruger and Marlin I have are rare birds, but I don't think so.

Nick:)

I haven't cleaned my 10-22 yet . But, I just use it to shoot unwanted critters around my house. It's got to have a couple of thousand rounds through it, at least. No problems.

mine jams every 25 shots or so, with at least 10 kinds of ammo and all 3 mags, clean or dirty makes no difference... guess I got a lemon

I've heard thousands mines never gone that far I think I am on 500 or so without cleaning it. And I'm talking swabbing out the barrel. Never have pulled the trigger assembly as described above so it's prolly been 2000 or so without that being done.

If yours is jamming something is wrong call Ruger I am sure they will fix it free. A lot of guns have to go back to the factory to be adjusted.

My bro has shot his 10/22 well over probably 10,000 rounds of federal bulk 22.LR, with no cleaning and it will not jam on factory 10rnd rotary magazines! You get issues when you use the after market 25+rnd banana magazines.

I have 2 10/22's (one blue deluxe sporter that is about 20 years old, and one stainless/laminated that I just got last year) and go several thousand easily without cleaning. I do find however that if I put a little Slip2000 or FP-10 on teh bolt and inside the receiver at about the 5-600 mark it goes on and on without a hiccup.
I've probably only taken the oldest one down for a complete detail cleaning about 4 or 5 times and it's got close to 20K thru it now...

Depends on what ammo I use. Some have a wax coating that can be messy. I like CCI, I can usually shot a couple hundred rounds with no problems. I just replaced the ejector, so it hardly jams now.

my normal procedure is to shoot until accuracy drops off, and then clean. That might take a number of years...........

I clean out the barrel and the chamber after every 500 round brick. Never had any problems, except with Remington Viper ammo, but that was the ammo's fault - the copper was delaminating from the lead to the point that I could peel it away by hand.

Well, I'm a little embarrassed to admit that I clean mine after every use.
Do that with every firearm I own.
Just the way I was taught I suppose......

Back years ago when I lived in the country and could shoot in my back yard, I ran brick after brick of .22 ammo through 10/22's and as long as I used factory or Butler Creek magazines, it just get going and going thousands of rounds between cleaning.

With the factory barrels, they may not be long range tack drivers, but they will eat the ammo like candy.

Didn't clean mine for years after I got mine ( early eighties ) and it's been years since I cleaned it. Thousands of rounds and a lot of fun.

i agree. shoot it till the accurracy drops off then clean it really well , take it back outside and shoot it about 50 times or so to get some carbon back in it and you should be good to go

If you buy the "cheapo" ammo
It has way more LEAD shavings
I have to clean mine way more often with the cheapo .22 ammo:mad:

Absolutely! I've had that happen with the aftermarket mags. Stick with the factory 10-round rotary!

I've got a couple 10/22's and a Marlin model 60...both excellent actions. My orginal 10/22 has several thousands of rounds through it. The only issue I had was some lube that jelled and froze the action. I had to break it down to clean it out but never had problems from ammo. I admit that most post-shooting cleaning are just a quick wipe down of the action and bore-snake through the barrel...I do a good cleaning a couple times a year on all my guns whether I shoot them or not.
