Ruger 1911s-anyone have any experience with these?

At my local range they have a 1st run ruger 1911 and it's been beat to hell and it functions great. It's a rental gun so it's been abused and they let me strip it down and inspect it and everything checked out. It's still there and still going strong but as far as newer ones I can't speak about I'd trust the other members opinions on that. I'm gonna start saving for a chambers custom so I got a long was to go...lol

What standpoint do you want the opinion from? I can give you the "it's an ok pistol for the price" bla bla crap, or the custom firearm maker's opinion that says: "A defensive pistol should be the best you can get. Not some sub $200 pile of crap and MIM pars that the company charges $500+ for."

The expression "Buy once, cry once" comes to mind. As previously noted, the standards for range toys differ from collectibles and carry pistols. In post 14, the OP states that he was looking for stainless and Commander-sized with an eye towards carrying it. By that measure, I am more comfortable choosing something a bit more up-market. The quasi-custom vendors such as Ed Brown and Les Baer tempted me, but I chose to send stock Colts to a gunsmith and have them altered to suit my tastes and needs. Note that this was not needed for functionality, just frippery (checkering, fancy sights, blended beavertails, etc.). In the end, the prices were about the same as a Brown/Baer but they were built to my order, which adds a certain je ne sais quoi to the ownership experience.

The most recent addition, from the Colt Custom Shop as a 2011 Centennial celebration:

Another one, this an older Combat Commander from Lew Bonitz (post-YoBo):

There are reasonable alternatives to Colt for use as the basis for a custom build, primarily from Springfield. I have just always preferred the prancing Pony.

Colt was my first choice but I wanted feedback on some other options. Yours are very nice-as is the Randall. Model 14?

Colt of days past isn't the Colt of today.

Just throwing that out there

I'm a big fan of the Dan Wesson line. The Valor is kick ass and I love the ECO.

I had a Springfield GI and loved it for its simplicity. But I hated it for its sights. And with no gunsmiths around, I didn't feel up to tackling it myself. I sold it, with plans to get one of the more upgraded models with the beavertail safety and bigger sights.

Out of all the 1911s I have had the Colt was the only ones I had real trouble with. The Defender was a dream with Wilson Combat mags, the factory ones were crap. I had two 1991A1s that both had to go in for warranty work to get them to feed ball ammo and one of those never did function 100%.
On the Wilson Combat mags, every problem I have ever had with a 1911 other than the two Colts were fixed by changing to these mags.

The new ones that are made in the USA have much better sights, 3 dots instead of the GI style

Had a New Agent a couple years ago that the magazines had to be beat out of the frame with a screwdriver and a hammer, Colt forgot the importance of machining the inside of the frame the first time
