Ruger Firearms....

I have a mini...love it for what it is, however go to perfect union BBS and do some research.

You might notice many of the negatives of the thread mention sights...historically the metal sights have been the weak link for most Rugers. The Mini-14 has been through many iterations. The first edition had the worst sights and many other problems. They then beefed up the design; but usually made the sights poor for any sort of distance shooting.

A second thing you might notice is how so many mention the expense of magazines. Part of this is due to the Clinton gun ban and partly due to Ruger no longer selling >10 round mags to anyone other than LEO. This drove Ruger factory mag prices through the roof.

Since you presumeably work in gun store, you are most certainly aware that many after market magazines are of poor quality. Since hi-cap factory mags were too expensive many folks "cheaped out" and bought poor quality after market hi-cap mags. I would bet just about any reliability of feeding issues experienced can be directly linked to crappy mags. A semi-auto is only as good as its magazine.

Good luck on your future Ruger Clark, they are a blast. (buy good mags)

Thanks zen. We have some after market mags but i havent heard a THING good about them.. i was consequently cautious as to getting them. i will let ya know if i bring the mini 14 home.

mini's are "ok" i suppose, but an AK or AR is a lot better imho. AK is cheaper to boot.

i also think the m ini's MSRP is too high for what ya get.

ALWAYS (almost, anyway) use ruger brand mags, i have seen them lately for ~$40 for the 20's, sometimes a little cheaper, anything else is a crap shoot, some are good, most arent.

why do i prefer the AK/AR? they are both more reliable, more accurate, accesories are easier to come by, much more rugged, really no comparison imho.

and yes i have all 3.

the ONLY reason imho to get a mini would be if ya live in a state where the AK/AR isnt legal.

I would urge you to buy any and all guns you can possibly afford while you are working at a gun shop. You will probably never have such a good opportunity again, so take advantage of it -- even if that means eating beans and rice most of the time.

I've had several of the Mini-14s, all of them somewhat older versions. None were superbly accurate, but they did all that I wanted to do. Unlike many people, I'm not all hung up on accuracy that I can't really use anyway. Mini-14s do just fine in my opinion.

Since Clinton's crap, Ruger has not sold any Mini-14 magazines except for those holding only five rounds. Within the past year or less some of the original 20 round Ruger factory made mags have appeared on the market priced at $40 apiece. Trust me, they are worth it! Spend two hundred bucks on five of them and you won't regret it! These can be found in ads in Shotgun News. GET SOME! The Demoncrats are hard at work bringing us more draconian gun, ammunition, and magazine restrictions just as quickly as they can pull it off, and George will probably sign it into law. Pardon my rant.

I've owned Ruger single action and double action revolvers in .22, .357, and .45 calibers, a couple of older Ruger .22 automatics, a 10-22 that is old enough to wear a metal butt plate, as well as those Mini-14s I mentioned. They were all tough, reliable, and excellent values, and the only reason I ever got rid of one was because I wanted something else more at the time. I've still got an older Mini-14 and it's a keeper now, along with the Ruger magazines I bought before that idiot, Clinton, was even elected.

Everybody who wants something that shoots had better buy it soon, along with spare magazines and plenty of ammunition. Dark days are ahead.

recon-

The Mini is good but like others say, make sure the mags work. Ruger mags are expensive but since you work in a shop you may get a bit of a break on pricing. I've owned a Mini for 15 years and it has been reliable and reasonably accurate until it gets hot which can be awfully quick. Even then, it gets a lot of FMJ down range and in the target area in a hurry.

I've also owned a few Ruger revolvers and kept one. I traded the others off for different stuff not because there was anything wrong with them. I still have a stainless Blackhawk in 45LC and it is a strong framed gun. You can load pretty hot and get away with pressures that would be marginal in other makes.

NOW.....are you going to get one soon????? LOL....

Mini's are sleek but my fave is still my ChiCom AK.

while the mini is "ok" i wouldnt go much farther than that, esp. for the $$ they are going for these days, i just think the MSRP is wayy to high for what ya get when ya can get a romanian AKM for less than $400 which will be more reliable and probably at least as accurate and shoots a better round (762X39 or 545X39) and mags and accessories are cheaper. and for $2-$300 more than a mini ya can get an AR which is again a lot more rifle than the mini. the only pro imho is that ruger 20s are ONLY going for $30 or $40 these days, i can remember when they went for 2X that lol.

i wouldnt get one these days unless i lived in kali/etc and couldnt get an AR or AK.

i havent used my mini in 10 yrs probably, when ya can pick between 2 AKs and an AR and a mini the mini isnt gonne get chosen very often.

not one army in the world i am aware of issues a mini14 while every army in the world (well, a lot of them anyway) issues AR's and AK's that speaks volumes to me when i am looking for a rugged rifle.

Ruger's guns are tanks...most people agree on that part. I just wanted to comment on the company.

Ruger has been in business over 50 years now, and I have read that they have turned a profit every year. Also, they have no corporate debt and have financed all their major projects with their own money. Plus, (in the last article i read) they had 25-30 million in cash assets tucked away.

That is pretty much the American dream. Start up your own business, succeed like gangbusters, then die doing what you love.
