Ruger Mini 14 - NRA edition

Hmm, I hadn't considered an AK, because I had heard that their accuracy was pretty bad outside of 100 yards. Any other AK shooters out there who could comment? Thanks for all the input so far!

either one of my AK's ( a romanian '74 and a egyptian maahdi '47) will out shoot my mini as far as accuracy goes,

also either one of my AK's will stay on a 18" plate at 300 yards off hand/iron sites, the myth that AK's arent accurate is just that, a myth, they might not shoot with a remington 700 .30-'06 but they work just fine for what they were made to do, out to ~400 yards or so, i would love to try mine at over 300 yds but havent had a chance to, i might give it a try after deer season just to see how it would do.

but, FWIW, while the AK's will easily stay on the plate at 300 the mini will not, not with irons anyway, never have tried one with a scope, mine does not have a stock rear site either, the stock rears i dont like, IIRC mine is a lyman, i would have to look to be sure, and it did help a bit, but it still wont shoot with either of my AK's.

i always wondered why the mini had such crummy sites, of course the sites were easier to overlook when the rifles ran $200 or so lol.

as far as the stamped vs machined rec'r AK's, a bud who is (or was) a dealer randomly picked 2 rifles, a stamped bulgy and a machined bulgy (IIRC?) & of the 2 the stamped shot just a tad better, go figure? personally, i dont think it matters much.

of course a springfield armory M1A will shoot rings either the AK or the mini, a AR15 will also to a lesser degree.

FWIW my chinese paratrooper SKS will also outshoot my mini, and IIRC i only paid ~$100 for it lol,

i have had my mini, believe it or not, since '79, i recently found the old sales rec'pt, it was $200 with 2 30 round mags tax included, but that was going on 30 yrs ago, makes me feel OLD lol.

Has anyone shot the new mini-14 target model? While not an "assault" type rifle, I've read several reviews with the average groups 1-1.5" at 100 yards (in line with colt m4 model) and with certain ammo being around .6-.7" at 100 yards. Seems like a lot of trouble though with that 11 ounce weight on the end and almost 10lb overall weight. Handled one the other day at a gunstore and it was a little hefty, but balance was ok with the laminate stock. Priced at 800......
