Rugged & Durable Fixed Blades

Sorry for the thread drift on this.

So I have looked at Scrapyard before several times and they never have any for sale. I've read that they sell fast (in hours?) once they get put on the site.

So I have a question: How do you know when they post them? Just check their site every day around the time they are supposed to post them?

Is there a mailing list or something?

Keep an eye on their forum. In the past, they would announce the approximate time of the knife going up in the store and everyone would refresh the page until it appeared. Everyone tries to order at once and the blade can sell out in minutes. This time (supposedly) the knife will be up for four weeks and then ship a couple of months later. Scrapyard isn't exactly on the ball as far as keeping everyone informed on the status of new products and orders. On the scrapyard forums "Two weeks" is an inside joke and means "eventually." It is not a place for instant gratification, some of their knives are pretty nice though.

Yes, I know - the NMSFNO is calling me .... calling me ..... calling me....

Damn, I wish it would stop!!! :D

Scrap Yard has its own forum. http://www.scrapyardknives.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php They will announce the next knife coming up for sale, and the time when you can place an order. Nobody is sure when the Scrapper 5 will be available for an order, but it should happen soon.

For Busse kin knives that are no longer available from the companies, check the Busse/Swamp Rat/Scrap Yard exchange on Blade Forums.

Check out the Busse/Scrapyard/Swamp Rat Exchange threadhere on BF. There's usually about anything you could want in there over the course of a week or so.

I have to echo two thoughts here: The Busse family of knives (Busse/Scrapyard/Swamp Rat) are the king of the hill when it comes to tough-use indestructable knives. Busse knives are my favorite, any blade made of Infi steel is going to be worth its weight in gold when you need it to perform. They have everything from a very small 3 inch blade (Game Warden or Cultellis) up to an 11 inch NMF Battle Mistress which is a real monster of a blade (not to mention a few special run blades like the MOAB.) The Steel Heart in its various varieties is generally regarded as one of the most useful size knives for hard outdoor use. The Busse Company Store has several different Busse items available including the Skinny ASH (Anniversary Steel Heart) and the new SAR-4 which looks like an incredibly promising knife.

The one draw to Busse knives is that they're not cheap. I paid $600 for my NMF Battle Mistress a couple of months ago. Not everyone is willing to put down that kind of coin for a knife. If that's the case, RAT Cutlery is the next best thing to a Busse for my money.

I really love the Busses, too. It's comforting to know you're carrying a knife that is probably unable to be broken without abusing it with things like a vise and a three-pound hammer, which is most likely not going to happen out in the wild. :D

The drawback is their thick grinds and the effect on cutting. I recently went out in the yard with a big box full of knives and did some cutting on an old, hard, dry maple round.

The knives that whittled it best were cheap Moras with scandi grinds, followed by thin, flat-ground knives. The knives that performed the worst were most of the thick Busses with steep edge bevels.

There were exceptions to the "thick knives cut wood poorly" performance.
The thicker knives that did very well were:

-the Fallkniven F1
-the Busse SARsquatch and Skinny ASH (two of the thinner Busse blades)
-the Ontario RAT TAK1 (D2 model. This one surprised me. I had convexed it on a belt sander. It takes a wicked edge and cuts very well)

I guess this leads to a question:
Do you want a knife that is first and foremost "Rugged and durable," (like the thicker Busses), or a rugged and durable knife that is also reasonably efficient in normal use (some of the Busses, Fallkniven, etc.)?

Stay sharp,
desmobob

I have to admit that I really bought my scrapyard SOD because of its legendary toughness and what knife nut doesn't want at least a couple of indestructable super knives in the collection? It is pretty cool to have a knife that you can reach out and do something that you wouldn't even remotely consider doing with your other knives....

That said. I don't really carry my SOD around for the just in case I have to do something stupid with my knife scenario. I tend to carry more optimized knives for the activities that I think I'm going to be doing. If that involves chopping then the SOD is coming for the ride (or an axe) + a little EDC blade. If it involves just a good all rounder with the possibility of some chopping then the RC-6. If it involves mostly cutting, whittling and back-packer type stuff then most of my 4-5" knives come for the ride.

I couldn't really imagine knife monogamy....
