Rugged Hike With Mrs Pit !

I don't suppose you go fishing?

The base of that cliff looks fishy to me... it looks like the type of thing my brother in-law drags me down in Wales!

as usual pit your great pics sure brighten our days in austin since we are in a terrible drought.the deer kill would make the hairs stand up on my head, cougars are lb. for lb. our strongest animal. even a single wolf would'nt have a chance---now 2 wolves, a different story. in our area the hogs would have even eaten the antlers. we found all that remained of a cow from the sept. flood---the skull & hip bone. all the rest had been consumed. beautiful country & great companions.

Early into the hike we came across this recent Cougar kill, it kinda kept us on high alert for the rest of the hike !!!

Man that is intense. I came across a cougar kill a few year back similar to that one. It was a doe, that I figured was killed in the early hours of the day I was there. It was completely whole all but a good sized bite from its neck. The kitty must have gotten scared off by a logging truck or something, but I sure got the hell out of there quick and a serious case of the hebbie-jebbies!

Nice pics man!

Hey pit dog, CB mentioned you could use the antlers for knife scales. They are also useful for making buttons, headpiece for a bow drill set (the 'Y'), an awl (3 or 4 sided - the bottom one) for making holes in Birch bark (basketmaking) and as a bodkin (round and blunt) for opening up the weave in wicker basket making or untying stubborn knots.

Yeah I now realise just how many uses they do have Doc, I'll grab em straight away next time !

I suppose you have to be careful about picking up antlers from fresh kills in some areas. Someone might think you are poaching. Seems like a waste to leave it. That leg bone could be made into a knife handle or something for a ferro rod. Nice walk about.
